Global smartphone shipments reached 359.6 million units in Q4 2020, a slight decrease of 2% compared to the previous year. Over the whole year, nearly 1,265,000,000 smartphones were sold, compared to 1,367,000,000 last year. The 7% drop can be explained by the current pandemic and restrictions imposed by governments around the world, which have prevented many stores from opening normally.

Samsung dominates market in 2020, Apple hits highs in fourth quarter

The fourth quarter is generally the best for the US business. It was during this period that Apple released its new iPhones, and it looks like the new iPhone 12s are a commercial success as sales increased 4% compared to the same period last year. Indeed, just two weeks after its launch, the iPhone 12 was already the best-selling 5G smartphone in the world. However, the smallest model in the line, the iPhone 12 mini, would not sell as well as the others. Faced with disappointing sales, Apple would have made the decision to reduce production of the smartphone.

The big loser of 2020 is undoubtedly Huawei, which saw its sales decrease by 22% compared to 2019, and its market share by 3%. Moreover, Chinese manufacturer is no longer even in the TOP 5 most popular manufacturers of the fourth quarter. Already in the third quarter, we could see that Huawei’s sales were falling sharply compared to these competitors. This can be explained by the restrictions imposed by the United States government, which prevents Huawei from using Google services on its smartphones.

Xiaomi appears to be the manufacturer that has been least impacted by the pandemic, since its sales increased by 19% in 2020, and its market share by 3%. In the fourth quarter, Xiaomi can even boast of a 31% increase in sales, much more than all of its competitors. At this rate, there is no doubt that the Chinese manufacturer will manage to climb to the top of the ranking in the years to come.
