Magnum is not a word that can be easily translated into Vietnamese because in English it has many meanings. However, if only the aspect of the gun, the magnum could be understood as “A gun designed to fire bullets with more power than the same class.”
So what does the above concept mean?
S&W Model 27, the world’s first magnum.
In the 20th century, the technology of semi-automatic shotguns loaded with ice was gradually improving. Because of that, the revolvers have become obsolete.
To change this, the king of revolvers Smith & Wesson focused on tapping into the strength of the turntable design – the ability to use large ammunition without being affected by gun handle size. .
In 1935, S&W introduced the Model 27, the world’s first Magnum. The caliber of the gun – .357 magnum – was just a shotgun ammunition, but it was far more powerful than the popular pistol caliber as 45ACP and 9mm.
One can see the logic behind the development of the magnum pistol that if only six shots could be fired, those six shots should be the strongest 6 shots possible. Today, of course, magnums are also in the form of 7 or 8 bullets, but six will remain the most prevalent mechanism.
Magnum’s popularity in popular culture
In the 1971 movie Dirty Harry, the character Harry Callahan, played by Clint Eastwood, had the following line:
“I know what you’re thinking. Did he shoot six times or just five? To tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I myself can’t count.
But since this is the .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, if hit will make your head fly, you have to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?
Do you think you’re lucky? “
At the time of the film’s release, the S&W Model 29 with the .44 Magnum caliber was the most powerful pistol in the world. The appearance of the gun and Clint Eastwood’s dialogue have built a reputation for the Model 29 as the “hand cannon” for skilled gunmen.
Today, although .44 Magnum has been surpassed by other caliber, no one will forget that this is the size that brought magnum into popular culture.
Every Magnum is a revolver?
The revolver has the same caliber .38 Special.
One thing to note is that not all revolvers are magnums, and magnums are not encapsulated in this configuration.
One of the most popular revolver revolvers is the .38 Special. This was a shorter ammunition size of .357 Magnum 1, but the destructive power lost 9mm. If in a video game you are able to use a revolver at the beginning of the game, there is a high chance that the gun will use a caliber .38.
In terms of magnum not being encapsulated in the turntable configuration, another typical example of magnum pistols in popular culture is the Desert Eagle, also known by Vietnamese gamers as “green silver”.
Desert Eagle is a gun model developed in the late 70s and can use 3 ammunition sizes of .357, .44 and .50 AE with a ammunition capacity of 9, 8 and 7 rounds in one tape respectively.
The famous green silver of gamers.
Besides the Desert Eagle, another popular semi-automatic magnum gun is the .357 Coonan. This is a relatively similar short 1911 gun.
The common downside of both guns on it is that because the magnum ammunition is too large, the load with tape has made the handle of the gun relatively wide, making the two models cocoon the user.
Why is Magnum so powerful in the game?
Despite having higher firepower than other handgun ammunition, after all, it was still difficult for a magnum to surpass rifle bullets.
The reason for the magnum power boost in the game is the balance of gameplay. More specifically, in military shooting games, the magnum will not be a weapon that can be easily found on the battlefield. Instead it can only be picked up from senior officers or in their offices.
Because of this, the ammo accompanying the magnum was relatively few. The game makers decided to increase the firepower of their guns to make each magnum shot as special as possible. Furthermore, because the magnum pistol has high recoil and slow fire rate, giving each bullet more firepower is also a necessary balancing factor. After all, if the magnum is shown to be the super powerful gun in the movie, why wouldn’t they do it with the game?
The context of the horror game is similar. In the Resident Evil series, ammunition is generally a very rare resource, so magnum ammo will be even rarer than conventional shooting games. Therefore the power of the magnum in the horror game has been multiplied. In the RE games, a few magnum bullets are enough to take down a large boss.
The magnum in Resident Evil REmake has only 6 in the whole game, but 6 is more than enough.
In summary, it can be seen that while the magnum pistol was already a powerful weapon in real life, the appearance in games and movies reinforced its reputation of “hand cannons”.
