MacBook Pro 16: Design

MacBook Pro 16 has a few design changes compared to its predecessor. The device has a 3-sided size of 14.01 x 9.77 x 0.66 inches and a weight of 2.13 kg (2.17 kg if you choose the M1 Max chip version). This version of the machine has the same surface area as the 16-inch model using Intel chips, with a slightly thicker body.

The outer shell of the machine is made of recycled aluminum, with a flat surface finish, with ventilation slots fitted on the side to improve heat dissipation performance.

But the biggest design change is on the inside. Specifically, the device is equipped with a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR screen, wrapped inside an ultra-thin bezel, and has a camera knob on the top edge.

The camera knob is perhaps the most controversial design detail of the MacBook Pro 16. Another major design change is that Apple has decided to remove the Touch Bar function for this version of MacBook. Replacing the Touch Bar strip is a row of functional buttons with more practicality.

In our test, the MacBook Pro 16’s display peaked at 520 nits when displaying HDR content. This is an impressive level of brightness, allowing you to see everything displayed on the screen clearly even when using the device outdoors.

The MacBook Pro 16’s screen is capable of covering 109.3% of the sRGB color gamut and 77.4% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

MacBook Pro 16: Keyboard and touchpad

MacBook Pro 16 is equipped with the latest version of the Magic Keyboard keyboard. Although the journey is not too deep, the keyboard of this MacBook version still gives me a comfortable input experience thanks to its good sensitivity in each button.

Apple has decided to remove the Touch Bar feature and replace it with a row of function keys. The device is equipped with a power button cum Touch ID fingerprint security located on the right corner of the keyboard. This fingerprint sensor has a very good sensitivity, allowing me to log in to the system account quickly and securely.

Underneath the keyboard is a touchpad with a huge surface area. The touchpad has a smooth surface finish, allowing me to easily move my finger to control the mouse pointer and interact with all applications on the macOS operating system.

MacBook Pro 16: Performance

Up to now, the M1 Max is the most powerful chip Apple has ever equipped on its MacBook models, and that is clearly shown in our benchmark tests.

When testing the overall performance of the chip with the Geekbench 5.4 multi-core performance test, we recorded a result of 12683 points. This is an extremely impressive result, and much higher than the scores of the laptop models we have tested before. For comparison, the MacBook Pro 16 has a much higher performance score than the Dell XPS 15 (7477 points), Razer Blade 15 (6662 points).

The impressive performance score above accurately reflects the actual performance of the laptop. Specifically, in the video transcoding speed test with the HandBrake application, the Apple laptop completed the conversion of a 4K video to 1080p resolution in just 4 minutes 48 seconds. This is one of the most impressive results we have ever recorded on this test.

The new MacBook Pro line also has dizzyingly fast data exchange speeds. When testing the speed of the machine’s internal memory with the Blackmagic Disk test, the MacBook Pro 16 produced read and copy speeds of 5315 and 5565 MBps, respectively.

MacBook Pro 16: Graphics processing power

Although the MacBook line is not known for being good gaming laptops, the M1 Max chip of the version we reviewed offers enough performance to play many different games on the market.

Specifically, this MacBook is capable of running the game Rise of the Tomb Raider (chinihr configuration at Very High, 1080p resolution) with an average frame rate of 73.8 fps. This result is much more impressive when compared to the MacBook Pro 14 series using the M1 Pro chip, with an average frame rate of 39.3 fps.

MacBook Pro 16: Webcam

MacBook Pro 16 is equipped with a 1080p webcam, which delivers good image quality both when taking photos and recording videos. This webcam has outstanding image quality when compared to most 720p webcam models on the laptop market today.

MacBook Pro 16: Heat dissipation

The MacBook Pro 16 has an impressive heat dissipation capacity, allowing me to work comfortably for long periods of time without experiencing thermal overload.

After letting the machine stream 1 HD video for 15 minutes, the laptop still maintained a stable temperature and operated smoothly, emitting not much noise.

MacBook Pro 16: Battery life

MacBook Pro 16 has an impressive level of battery life, allowing me to use the machine for the rest of the workday without having to charge it halfway. In our battery life test, the MacBook Pro 16 lasted 15 hours and 31 minutes after continuously surfing the web over wifi, with the screen brightness set at 150 nit.

This is a very impressive battery life result, and is at least a few hours longer when compared to the battery life of most competitors on the market.

MacBook Pro 16 supports fast charging, allowing us to charge the battery from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes of plugging in the charger. You can charge the battery through either the Thunderbolt 4 port or the MagSafe 3 port.
