The OPPO X 2021 is an amazing smartphone that turns into a 7.4-inch tablet in seconds, thanks to a flexible OLED screen.
After smartphones equipped with a foldable screen, such as Motorola’s Razr or the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, the Chinese manufacturer Oppo is demonstrating its smartphone concept with a scrolling screen. The astonishing device had been presented with great fanfare at the end of last year and we had the opportunity to test its operation.
At first glance, the Oppo X 2021 – because that’s the working name of the prototype we were able to handle – looks like a recent high-end smartphone, with its 6.7-inch OLED screen. We notice that it is a little thicker than usual, but nothing very shocking!
However, all you have to do is flick the start / fingerprint reader with a thumbs-up from the bottom up, and the screen width almost doubles in seconds! The display thus goes from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches. The smartphone is thus transformed into a real tablet.
With an opposite gesture (from top to bottom) on the same button, the screen quickly and surely returns to its initial shape (it is also possible to double click on the button for this).
Android, iOS: what are the 10 best smartphones to buy in 2021?
To achieve this result – more impressive than a “simple” foldable screen – the manufacturer has integrated two motors responsible for pulling to the right the part of the OLED screen rolled up inside the chassis.
This mechanism has two very visible consequences. First of all, the left edge of the OPPO X 2021 is curved, while the right side is not! Then, the top and bottom edges of the smartphone are not smooth when the screen is unfolded.
Will OPPO X 2021 be released?
Like concept cars, well known to car enthusiasts, the OPPO X 2021 does not necessarily have to be marketed in the long term, although it is fully functional at the moment. It’s a shame, because this technology seems to mistreat the OLED screen less than a foldable smartphone. In addition, it is perfectly possible to use the smartphone in its “normal” form most of the time and use it in this extended mode only at certain times, for watching a video for example.
Of course, the ColorOS operating system must be perfectly optimized to take advantage of this expandable display. We can already see that playing a video, taking a photo or consulting a site adapt in real time to the deployment of the screen. On the other hand, in some sections of the system, the extended width of the screen is well exploited, which makes it possible to display both the main menu, on the left of the screen, and the parameters of each section on the screen. right side of the display.
Still, the design of the OPPO X 2021 pull-down screen must have posed some problems for Chinese engineers, which probably explains the absence of certain elements, such as the front optical sensor, the volume control key, the drawer giving access to the SIM slot and the headset socket. If the latter is no longer really essential, the other missing elements may chill some users. Unless the eSIM is rapidly democratizing and the front photo sensor finally finds its place under the OLED screen (OPPO has been working on this technology for several years).
