Mr. Azim Yacan is a member of the People's Democratic Party (HDP) – a pro-Kurd party, and the third largest party in Turkey.
Mr. Yacan was arrested with his deputy and charged with "propagating terrorist ideas" and being a member of the Kurdish People's Party (PKK).
The Turkish government has dealt harshly with HDP members in recent months, accusing them of being affiliated with the PKK, an organization that Turkey considers to be "outlawed". .
In August, three newly elected mayors of the HDP were dismissed for such allegations. Two months later, three other mayors were arrested for the same reason.
The HDP is the only party to criticize Turkey's offensive against Kurdish forces in northern Syria last month. HDP considers this an "invasion".
