Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives in Florida, weeks after the Capitol Hill riots.
Sources say Trump is expected to meet Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the Republican Minority faction in the House of Representatives, on Jan. 28. McCarthy was a close ally of Trump when he was president, but criticized Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 as crowds stormed Capitol Hill.
The Florida meeting is expected to be the first step toward consensus among conservatives before the Senate conducts a trial impeaching Trump next month. Only 5 out of 50 Republican senators voted in favor of the trial, making it clear that Democrats will not be able to get the required 17 Republican votes necessary to condemn Trump and ban him from running for reelection.
McCarthy opposed impeachment of Trump, but also criticized the former president.
“The president is held accountable for the January 6 attack on parliament by rioters. He should have protested immediately when he saw what was happening,” McCarthy said Jan. 13. .
Trump is said to remain in power within the Republican party and may continue to run for re-election in 2024. Since leaving the White House, he has remained relatively silent in front of the media and has established the Former President’s Office in Palm Beach county, Florida, where he lives.
“The office will be responsible for managing the letters, announcements, schedules and activities of President Trump to promote US interests and implement the Trump administration’s agenda through advocacy and organization. public activities and activities, “quoted the announcement of the establishment of an office on January 25. “President Trump will always and forever be a champion for the American people.”
