The Transparency Committee of the High Authority for Health (HAS) has been working for several months to assess the effectiveness of 1,200 homeopathic medicines. The institution was seized in the summer of 2018 by the Minister of Health, Agnès Buzyn, to end the debatebetween pro doctors and anti-homeopathy. This assessment is still underway, and the final opinion is expected in June.
But a provisional notice who prompt at the end of the refund of these products has already been validated on Wednesday May 15, 2019. According to the information reported by France Info, the “medical service rendered” of homeopathyis considered insufficient. The laboratories have ten days to make observations and / or request to be heard by the committee. The government will then the last word, but the minister has warned that she intends to follow this advice.
These drugs are currently reimbursed up to 30% when delivered on medical prescription. Pro-homeopathy reminds us that granules cost Social Security 130 million euros per year, compared to 20 billion for conventional medicines. And the existence of at least a placebo effect would justify this investment.
HAS is said to have sent the provisional notice to the laboratories concerned (Boiron, Weleda and Rocal / Lehning) in order to inform them of this first decision, as provided for in the pre-established timetable. The opinion on homeopathic medicines is supposed to be revealed to the public when it is final. But the industry leader Boiron Lab denounced an information leak supposed to remain confidential and suspended its share price.
For its part, the HAS recalls “its attachment to the confidentiality of the works in their development phase and will not comment on the information circulating in the press.” Nearly 1,000 jobs at risk by these new measures.
