HP Omen 16: Design
Compared to last year’s version of the machine, the appearance of the HP Omen 16 does not have too many major changes. The difference in shell material, connection port position or design changes only shows up when you pay close attention.
The outer shell of the device is almost entirely made of metal, while the screen border of the device is made of hard plastic. Overall, the HP Omen 16 is a laptop with good build quality and finish, with every detail put together firmly and seamlessly.
Possessing a moderate level of resistance, the pair of screen hinges allows users to open the device with just one hand. Compared to its predecessor, the Omen 15, the HP Omen 16 has a longer appearance and a thicker body. Overall, the HP Omen 16 is a gaming laptop with good build quality and finish.
The machine is fully equipped with different types of connection ports, helping you work comfortably with common peripherals on the market. Along the right edge of the machine are equipped with 2 USB Type-A 3.0 ports. Meanwhile, on the left edge is a USB Type-A 3.0 port, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI port, a USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 4 support, a headphone jack and an SD card reader.
HP Omen 16: Keyboard and touchpad
Unlike HP Victus 16, Omen 16 is not equipped with a numeric keypad, which makes the buttons of the keyboard set more spacious. On the keyboard there is a function button used to open the Omen Gaming Hub application. With this app, you can customize various system settings, including fan speed, overall performance level, and more.
The buttons of the keyboard have a moderate travel and have a good response, providing a comfortable input experience whether you play games or work. The keyboard set is illuminated by a 4-zone RGB lighting system. This lighting system can be customized with colors and effects through the settings of the Gaming Hub app.
The device’s touchpad is located just below the spacebar. The surface of this touchpad has a spacious area, allowing me to easily control the mouse pointer to interact with different applications on the Windows 10 operating system.
HP Omen 16: Screen
Omen 16 is equipped with the same 16.1-inch panel, FHD resolution, 144Hz as in the Victus 16 version. This makes the display quality of these two laptops quite similar. During our testing, the screen averaged 400 nits of brightness.
Although the screen panel is slightly exposed in the edge area, you can only notice it when using the device in areas with low ambient light.
The screen has a good contrast ratio and color coverage, which can compete with other laptops in the same segment. Overall, the Omen 16’s screen gave us a good picture quality, nothing to complain about.
HP Omen 16: Performance
The Omen 16 version that we used in the review is equipped with an Intel Core i7-11800H chip, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 card, providing a high level of overall processing performance. With 16GB of RAM, HP’s gaming laptop is capable of handling multitasking very well, making it easy for me to interact with more than 40 Chrome tabs without experiencing lag.
Through the settings of the Omen Gaming Hub app, users can choose between system performance settings. In the net performance tests, we selected the “Performance” setting and transferred the graphics processing power to the discrete card.
The Omen is equipped with an Intel Core i7-11800H chip. This is an 8-core processor with a theoretical clock speed ranging from 2.3 to 4.6GHz. The chip supports the Thunderbolt 4 high-speed connection standard, giving it an edge when compared to other AMD-powered machines on the market.
In the Cinebench R15 performance test, the machine’s performance level was maintained for a long time and showed no signs of being reduced. Overall, the Omen 16 is a gaming laptop with a comprehensive level of performance, giving users a smooth user experience.
Our version is equipped with an SSD with a capacity of 512GB. The SSD of the machine has a fairly fast data writing speed, providing a smooth user experience for users.
Equipped with the powerful Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 series of graphics cards with 8GB of VRAM, the Omen 16 can play many different games on the market well. Testing the machine’s graphics processing capabilities with the 3DMark test, the Omen 16 returned very good results and was comparable to competing models such as the Alienware m15 and Legion 5 Pro.
Test the machine’s graphics processing capabilities with the Witcher 3 game (Highest configuration, 1080p), the Omen 16 can run with an average frame rate of 88 fps. This result is much higher than the average of the gaming laptop segment at the moment.
HP Omen 16: Heat dissipation
During use, the Omen 16 mainly heats up in the chassis area, where it is equipped with many cooling slot systems. On the top side, the machine maintained a fairly steady heat level throughout our testing.
The machine has the highest recorded temperature of 55 degrees Celsius in the underside area. The palm rest and keyboard area keep a stable temperature, providing a comfortable use experience during gaming. With this heat level, you can play games comfortably without worrying about overheating.
HP Omen 16: Battery life
Omen 16 is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 83Wh. In our battery life test, the Omen 16 lasted 7.5 hours after continuously surfing the web using wifi. This is an impressive level of battery life for a high-performance gaming laptop, easily surpassing competitors in the same segment at the moment.
Sold in the mid-range price segment, Omen 16 possesses upgraded points compared to the Omen 15 machine version released last year. It has a strong overall performance level, allowing users to smoothly play all the different games on the market. In addition to strong performance, the device also possesses a long battery life, especially when compared to other competitors in the same segment. Omen 16 is a good choice if you are looking for a good gaming laptop in the mid-range price segment.
