The Russian news agency quoted a notice from the US Treasury Department saying that Washington had listed 13 Russian ships related to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project to the sanctions list.
Along with that, the US also imposed sanctions on 3 legal entities related to the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

The company Koksokhimtrans, which manages and operates two transport ferries between Crimea and Russia, which is under US sanctions related to the situation in Ukraine, continues to be added to the list of sanctions related to Nord Stream-2.
Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture project between Gazprom (Russia) and five major European companies with the aim of building a gas pipeline from Russia to Western European countries via the Baltic Sea.
The US always tries to prevent Russia and Europe from implementing this project, so there are times when the relationship between Washington and Europe is in trouble, especially with Germany. Especially in this sanction, the US decided to exempt German companies from participating in Nord Stream 2.
As soon as the US announced the sanctions, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov called on the US to lift sanctions on Russia as a step to normalize relations between Moscow and Washington. But the call from Russia was not answered.
Nord Stream 2 project can supply 55 billion m3 of gas from Russia to Europe annually. The project faced fierce opposition from Ukraine because the country would lose toll revenue when the gas pipeline passes through the territory. The US also objected to accusations that the project threatens energy security in Europe.
Some European countries, especially Germany, counter that the US is not the decision maker for energy security in Europe. While countries bordering Russia such as Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania also oppose the Nord Stream 2 project for fear that it will help increase Russia’s bargaining power in regional politics.
The special thing is that before the US officially announced sanctions against Russia, the Axios page revealed that the US would exempt individuals and companies from participating in the construction of the Nord Stream project.
Among the names mentioned is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The information was revealed just before the first face-to-face meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on May 19.
Axios’s own source also revealed that Washington will exempt Nord Stream 2 AG, the company that oversees the Nord Stream 2 project.
Matthias Warnig, the company’s executive chairman and an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is also on the sanctions list, according to Axios.
