Earlier that same day, Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said his US counterpart Mike Pompeo had suggested to him that Washington was thinking about hosting the annual summit of Asia-Thai nations. Binh Duong in January 2020, and Malaysia did not support this idea.
Last week Chile canceled the holding of an APEC summit scheduled for November 16-17 due to violent street protests. Meanwhile, Malaysia is expected to host the next APEC summit, which is scheduled for the end of 2020.
The U.S. official, who declined to be named, said talks with Chile have been ongoing about Washington and Santiago working together to reorganize this year's summit at an unspecified location in the United States. But no decision has been made yet.
