A unit of the US Department of Defense has proposed the idea of building a space station for robots in the future. The space station, called Orbital Outpost, will serve as a support for US military space satellites. This will be the place where the experiments will take place and someday may be enough space for the whole person.
However, you should not be happy because the size of the proposed space station is only as small as a camping tent.
Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a branch of the US Department of Defense, introduced this interesting idea with the aim of building a small space station, specifically for defense activities.
DIU describes this space station as a space-based entity and is responsible for solving national security issues. To create such a space station, the agency is actively investing in large, small technology companies in areas such as robots, Internet security, unmanned systems, computing, Spare parts production and space technology.
As a rule, Orbital Outpost space station must ensure that it is a closed facility capable of supporting spatial assembly, micro-gravity, logistic testing and can store samples, at the same time producing, training and testing, … missions.
The Pentagon wants to turn this outer outpost into a versatile machine when it can assemble everything by robotic arms, even connecting with other space stations. However, the ultimate goal of Orbital Outpost is to support and create a living space for people.
Orbital Outpost will be only about 1m3 in size, maximum load of 80kg and power supply with a capacity of 1kW and pressure regulator. The station is capable of digital communication at least 100 kilobits per second. These are not very impressive parameters, but large enough for a small space station.
In the Breaking Defense description page, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty did not prohibit the construction of an outer space military station, including manned or automatic. Therefore the above idea is fully legal basis for implementation.
