For several years, fans of GoldenEye 007, a true classic of the N64, are working on the development of a remake worthy of the name. They had also planned to release it on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the original game in 2022. In the end, it will not see the light of day, at least not under that name. Indeed, James Bond license holders come to oppose the development of the remake.

How to finish Goldeneye 64 by shooting only one bullet?

GoldenEye 25 becomes Spies Don’t Die with all Bond references missing

GoldenEye 25 was developed with Unreal Engine 4 in order to offer better graphics than the original version. The remake was also supposed to bring some gameplay and solo missions improvements. Additionally, GoldenEye 007’s guns had all been refreshed to more match the look of contemporary guns.

The developer in charge of the project, Yannick Zenhäusern, detailed the situation in a video he posted on YouTube. He explains that the development of GoldenEye 25 has always been under the threat of rights holders. He and his team received a letter of formal notice from MGM and Danjaq. She asks them to officially stop the development of GoldenEye 25 by August 19.

Good news for those who have been looking forward to the remake, the developers will still keep the game removing all references to Golden Eye and James Bond. This does not prevent them from being strongly inspired by it to create the desired atmosphere and universe. The new project is now called ” Spies Don’t Die ». Yannick Zenhäusern declared that « we can’t make a Bond game, but we can still make a great game with all the beloved aspects of our favorite 90s shooter “. According to the new Twitter account of Spies Don’t Die, the game will be released on Steam within two to three years.
