Manufacturing will begin in March in “very large quantities,” the company said in a statement by CEO Choi Joo-sun reported by Business Wire.
Until now, we had to be content with 60 Hz on the few laptop models on the market equipped with OLED screens.. However, in addition to announcing that its OLED displays are finally coming to laptops, Samsung also revealed that some models will be compatible with a 90Hz refresh rate.
Only laptops equipped with an LCD screen could go above 60 Hz, some of them up to 360 Hz. In the smartphone sector, the first phone equipped with a 90 Hz AMOLED display from Samsung was the OnePlus 7 Pro, which we were able to test. Today Samsung Offers 120Hz Compatible QHD + OLED Displays.
A 90Hz Samsung OLED display is better than a 120Hz LCD display
Several laptop models in 2020 were compatible with 120 Hz screen refresh. This was for example the case of the Lenovo Legion 5, which had a Ryzen 5 4600H, a 120 Hz LCD screen and ‘a GTX 1650 graphics card.
Samsung Display believes that customers will rush to buy laptops with 90Hz OLED screens because of the experience they provide. Indeed, the company claims that the response time of its OLED display with a refresh rate of 90 Hz is 10 times faster than the best on the current market and comparable to that of a 120 Hz LCD panel. But that’s not all. According to Samsung, the image trails of 90Hz OLED and 90Hz OLED displays are 0.9mm and 1mm respectively.
Some of the future laptops with a 90 Hz screen may also be the first to feature an under-screen camera., since Samsung has revealed that it will first introduce this technology to laptops rather than phones. Joo Sun Choi, general manager of Samsung Display, said the company will produce “very large quantities” of its 14 inch 90Hz OLED display for laptops from March 2021. We can imagine that the first models will not be really cheap.
