“The Germans understand very well that if they give up this project now, they will never be able to get it back,” MP Pushkov said, saying this was the reason why Germany struggled with the US in the participation. this judgment.

The Russian congressman added that Democrat Joe Biden’s US presidential candidate is in favor of improving relations with Germany. In the event that Mr. Biden wins the election, Berlin has a chance to preserve Nord Stream 2.

Earlier, Russian and German parliamentarians were outraged at the claims made by US senators to threaten the port in the German city of Sassnitz with new sanctions on Nord Stream 2.

According to German newspaper Handelsblatt, in early August, three US Republican senators signed in a joint letter to the German wharf company Sassnitz warning of the consequences if the company would support the participation. Nord Stream 2 project.

Senate members Ted Cruz headed, including two other senators, Tom Cotton and Ron Johnson, warned Sassnitz, based in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Germany), of serious consequences. regarding this company’s role in the completion of Nord Stream 2.

If supporting the pipeline installation, Sassnitz would be severed commercial and financial ties with the US, the warning stated. Therefore, the Sassnitz company and the port of Mukran on the island of RĂ¼gen should immediately stop supporting the project, which has long been opposed by the administration of President Donald Trump.

Responding to the warning, Sergei Tsekov, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Council of the Russian Federation (Senate), said that US politicians are in “a state of extravagance”.

“Senators have overstated their responsibilities and functions, considering themselves the right to write such letters, which could be seen as rude and shameless threats,” Tsekov said.

Sergei Tsekov added that some people in Germany may be intimidated by American threats, but I express my hope that German society will reject such claims.

In addition, Mr. Tsekov is sure that the US will not reach its target, while Nord Stream 2 will be completed and put into operation soon.

Representative of the Party “Alternatives to Germany” for energy, MP Steffen Kotrets called the US senator’s letter “direct intervention in Germany’s sovereignty issues”.

“This is a new move for the US, a kind of economic war against sovereign energy policy, especially the gas policy of Germany and Europe”, Mr. Kotrets stressed.

Senator Kotrets also called for an immediate and direct response to the threats of his American colleagues. “The proponents of this letter should be imposed with sanctions, they should be banned from the European Union (EU), especially Germany,” said Kotrets.

Mr. Waldemar Gerdt, a member of the German parliamentary committee on international affairs from the German Replacement Party (AFD), also agreed with Mr. Kotrets. Mr. Gerdt emphasized the need for an American “adequate response to insolence” and stressed that if it were allies, they would not have acted that way.
