Review Oppo Reno: Will Oppo be able to successfully reach the high-end segment? – VnReview

While the high-end version of Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is a notable product in 10X zoom and top-of-the-line configuration, the Oppo Reno version is usually Oppo-focused product to bring this company to reach the high-end segment. granted in Vietnam market.

Oppo Reno has two versions: the regular Reno version and the Reno version 10x High-end zoom. The Reno version is usually sold in Vietnam for VND12.99 million, while the 10x Zoom version has just been put on the shelf at the end of June for VND20.9 million.

For several years now, Oppo has maintained a stable position as the second largest mobile phone market share in Vietnam. However, this company mainly succeeds in the low and mid-range segment, while the high-end and high-end segments contribute very limited to the market share of the company in Vietnam market.

The latest smartphone to join Oppo's high-end segment is the R17 Pro. The product has many interesting details such as super-fast charging in 40 minutes, eye-catching design, beautiful screen, good camera and long battery life. However, due to the fact that the set is too high, the market records show that the power of the Oppo F17 Pro is not really good.

However, Oppo does not easily ignore the high-end segment. The Oppo Reno is a new effort. Will this new Oppo product be enough to convince users at a price of 13 million VND or not?

Design

This year 's camera has become a popular "rabbit ears" removal solution, with Oppo being the "most enthusiastic" company with this trend. If you look back at a bit of history, it is understandable that Oppo is enthusiastic about the camera movement. Previously since 2013, the company has launched automatic camera rotation solution on the Oppo N3. Last year, Oppo also surprised to introduce the camera camera solution on the high-end Find X smartphone. Recently, the company continued to bring the camera to the mid-range product F11 Pro and then to Reno with the premium version Reno 10x Zoom.

Oppo is very enthusiastic about the camera movement that is flickering to remove rabbit ears on the screen

Although camera design is indented between Oppo machines, there is a difference like Find X indented the camera front and rear, F11 Pro has only one camera cluster before the middle and Reno, the camera is in the form of "shark fin "but the mechanism is still the same. The camera cluster will pop up and drop at a fairly fast speed for about 1 second, smooth and without any noise.

The rear camera's dual flash is on a self-indented camera selfie

The manufacturer also considers the possibility of dropping, so the "shark fin" camera cluster will recede when there is impact. Oppo said their tests showed that the indentation mechanism could operate at least 200,000 times, equivalent to 5 years of use with an intensity of 100 times a day, more than usual.

Reno's "shark fin" cluster has a 16MP front camera, and the voice speaker acts as a second speaker and dual flash LED. The voice speaker is in the camera cluster, but the device does not need to open this cluster when calling because there is still a small slot to exit the sound. However, when you need to use the flash for the rear camera, you will have to activate the camera cluster.

Reno's dual camera cluster is flat, not protruding

On the positive side, hiding LED flash into the retractable camera will make Reno's back more uniform in color. Perhaps it's also Oppo's intention because the effectiveness of the dark shooting modes on phones today makes the flash on the phone less useful. Another issue that should be mentioned is that the camera has a common drawback is that it is easy to attach to dust, it needs to be cleaned occasionally so as not to affect the image quality.

Machine with metal frame design, 9mm thickness facilitates the rear camera cluster flat, not protruding like other smartphones.

In addition to the strange "shark fin" camera cluster, Oppo Reno has a metal frame design sandwiched between two toughened glass surfaces. Both the frame and the back are well finished, the surface is smoothed. Especially Reno's rear camera cluster is designed flat, not protruding like most smartphones. This is partly because Reno's body is quite thick, 9mm, and weighs 185g. Reno feels like holding the dress and is sure that the back is curled but quite smooth when not using the case. The screen and chassis are seamlessly mounted, without being touched like on Oppo's mid-range smartphones.

The thin screen border is equivalent to the high-end smartphone Oppo Find X

On the front, Reno's rabbit-ear or no-drop water screen has a thin border, showing an almost 87% display rate, comparable to last year's Find X high-end smartphone but a bit thicker than the Galaxy S10's edge (display ratio). 88% market). Below the screen is an optical fingerprint sensor that has a much faster recognition speed than the optical fingerprint variables on the products we've ever experienced. The cross section of the sensor is large, making it easy to locate the finger during use.

On the edges, Reno is full of familiar ports and keys: audio jack, USB Type C port, and dual SIM. It does not have a memory card slot, but 256GB capacity is too much to use. It also comes with a 20W VOOC quick charger, plastic back cover and a screen with protective stickers.

Overall, Reno's design matches the price range. The machine has good materials and finishes, eye-catching surfaces and colors, thin screen edges without rabbit ears or water droplets and smooth "shark fin" parts. The minus point worth noting in the design is that the device is quite smooth without the cladding, there is no memory card slot (but 256GB internal memory is very comfortable) and no water resistance.

Screen and sound

The use of self-indented selfie cameras makes Reno's screen overflow and thin on all four sides without any detail entering the screen. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and Oppo toughened glass panels, it also understands the psychology of users should stick thin plastic stickers to enhance scratch resistance.

Reno uses 6.4-inch AMOLED panels Full-HD resolution + with pixel density of 402 PPI. The screen panel has a fairly high brightness (about 445 PPI when measured on a dedicated device), clearly enough for outdoor use. When taking a picture, the brightness of the background plate can clearly see the image displayed on the shooting screen. The color of the reproduced screen is quite standard, slightly more brilliant than the reality due to the characteristic of AMOLED panels.

Oppo does not offer many color mode options like Samsung, only the color correction option between cold, default and warm levels. The screen also has a wide viewing angle and deep black color, which are characteristic of AMOLED panels.

In terms of sound, Reno uses a voice speaker as a second speaker that supports the main speaker below the bottom edge. However, the sound coming from the voice speakers is very small and flat and does not produce a clear stereo effect like Apple products. The good news is that the main speaker has a high volume, high detail and no distortion.

Software and performance

Reno currently has the latest version of Oppo Color OS 6 version based on Android 9. The novelty of Color OS 6 is the bright white background, the font set Oppo Sans new and the application tray, Oppo details have not long been included.

In addition to these new points, Color OS 6 still inherits fully familiar features of Oppo: driving mode, ball assistant like iOS, gesture controls replace navigation keys, sidebar to quickly open the Good apps, gesture manipulations on the screen, cloning apps to use 2 apps like Facebook and Messenger on the same phone and game space functions to support gaming (notification options are displayed When playing games, lock screen brightness at game play and select some optimal modes for game play).

In terms of performance, the Reno version often uses a Snapdragon 710 processor, not a Snapdragon 855 like a Reno 10x Zoom. Genuine products sold in Vietnam will have 6GB RAM and 256GB internal memory, comfortable enough to no longer have to worry about the machine without external memory card slot. In actual use, the machine works quickly with common tasks. With the demand for games, the machine handles heavy games at a smooth level if it accepts to reduce the graphics mode to an average level. But the performance is not the strong point of the standard version of Reno because it has many machines equipped with more powerful, well-balanced processor chips that are heavy in graphics mode.

On performance metering applications, Reno scores significantly lower on the same price range in both overall performance and GPU performance and graphics performance. This difference is even more obvious when compared to high-end products from Xiaomi, Asus or older high-end machines.

Battery life

The Oppo Reno has a rather thick body (9mm) but due to the optimal priority for the rear camera assembly is not protruding, the battery capacity is only at an average of 3,765 mAh. The capacity is not large, so the average usage time is quite based on the measurement results with movie watching, web surfing and game activities. Through the test results of VnReview, the machine is enough to use in the day with normal needs, not too often.

Time to watch movies copied to the device, see at brightness and volume at 70%, counting from full until 10%.

Time to surf the web on Wi-Fi network, brightness at 70% and also calculated from full to 10%

Time to play the game continuously, from the moment the battery is full to 10%.

The battery aspect of Reno is to support the fast charging technology VOOC 20W. The total time of full charging takes about 80 minutes but the first half an hour can charge 50% of the battery and 90% of the battery after an hour. Compared to other fast charging technologies, Oppo's VOOC 20W technology has the advantage of a shorter total charging time and especially fast charging speeds that last up to 90% of the first battery.

Camera

According to the current trend, Oppo Reno's rear main camera has a resolution of 48MP, using Sony IMX 586 sensor with f / 1.7 and the 5MP secondary camera to capture the depth of image for the capture function. In the front, the selfie camera has indented 16MP resolution.

Good morning photos: In favorable lighting conditions, Reno's main camera performs very well. More detailed images, more in depth and balance between color bands. Colors often look a bit brighter than reality but not overly intense.

Photo difference and backlit: In complex lighting conditions, the camera recognizes and handles dark and light areas quite well, the image looks natural, not fake.

Low-light photos and night mode: In the absence of light, Reno's main camera often shifts the image's brightness quite a lot compared to the actual environment. So, if you only look at photos, many people think that the scene is not very bright. However, this way of handling must exchange the details of the low, flat image. When switching to night mode, the image clearly improves the detail, color and balance between the dark areas of the image. But also note that the night mode has a long exposure time, about 4 seconds, so it is better to hold the camera or better to have a point or use a stand. This mode is also not suitable for images with moving objects.

Font deletion picture: With the 5MP secondary camera, Reno identifies the subject to isolate the background quite naturally. The subject subject and the background behind the background are handled quite smoothly, without being smudged, especially when the subject and background are far away. With a human subject, the skin is smoothed, flattering, but if the subject is a leaf flower, the image erases the font as the subject color is lighter than that of a normal image because the machine applies the same smoothing effect. like activating beauty mode.

Selfie from the front camera: Oppo has long been strong in selfie cameras and this continues to show up in Reno. Reno's front camera cluster is similar to the previous camera on the Oppo F11 Pro and the experience is similar. This camera cluster is flickering rapidly for about 1 second and works smoothly, making no noise. In terms of image quality, if all the beauty modes are turned off, the images are sharp, highly detailed, fully reproducing the pros and cons on the face with bright and vivid colors. The camera supports HDR when the selfie significantly improves the light band when shooting backlit, selfie backlight.

Although there is only 1 single camera, it can still capture selfie to remove fonts. One note is that the font selfie removes only 8MP resolution, not 16MP as a normal photo, so the sharpness and detail are slightly reduced. When removing fonts, the auto-activated beauty effect helps make the face smooth and white and clear. Part of the background is also strongly erased, so it looks quite "virtual", lacking in nature and getting heavily cut into the hair.

summary

Overall, Oppo Reno is suitable for users who want a sleek smartphone, a good back-facing front camera, especially beautiful selfie, just enough performance and fast charging. However, this phone will not be suitable for those who want a phone to experience games or entertainment because the processing power is not strong enough, the edges are thin so the hands are easy to cover when playing the game.

The other difficulty of the Oppo Reno is that at a price of VND13 million, there are quite a few options with superior advantages in performance or equipped with advanced features such as wireless charging and waterproof. The products can be listed as Xiaomi Mi 9 (Snapdragon 855, wireless charger, camera with optical stabilization and extra wide-angle camera) or high-end old-fashioned smartphones Galaxy S9 / S9 +. In other words, Reno's price is currently quite high, needing to be reduced to increase attractiveness.
