The effects of therapeutic ultrasound

Heat effect:

  • When ultrasonic waves are absorbed, heat is generated to help relax muscles, dilate blood vessels, increase circulation, increase oxygen and nutrients, and promote an early end of the inflammatory process.

Mechanical effect:

  • Ultrasound has mechanical effects on tissues such as increasing membrane permeability, increasing absorption, activating metabolism, and softening adhesives.

Ultrasound is used to treat:
  • Arthritis, tendonitis, ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Injury to joints, soft tissues, bones after trauma.
  • Peripheral neuropathy.
  • Diseases of the peripheral circulation.

Contraindications to ultrasound therapy

Therapeutic ultrasound should not be used in parts such as eyes, brain, marrow, heart, genital organs, pregnant uterus, infected areas, neoplastic tissue areas, and suspected tumors. At the same time, care should be taken in the treatment of diseases related to fractures, growth plates, prostheses or acute inflammation.

Ultrasound causes few side effects, but burns can still occur if used incorrectly.

Treatment parameters of the therapeutic ultrasound machine ULS – 1000

Frequency: The frequency is selected according to the depth of the tissue to be treated. For tissues 5cm deep, the patient can use 1MHz frequency, 1-2cm use 3MHz frequency.

Pulse cycle: Pulse cycle is optional according to the goals of therapeutic ultrasound, 100% or 20% pulse cycle can be used depending on the therapeutic purpose.

Intensity: Like the pulse cycle, the intensity is adjusted to the treatment goals for maximum comfort and maximum therapeutic effect.

Treatment time: Usually 5-10 minutes depending on the goal of treatment. If therapeutic ultrasound is used to stimulate bone healing, the duration of treatment may be longer with lower intensity.

Number of treatments: depending on the treatment goals and the doctor’s instructions.

Therapeutic dosage

Therapeutic ultrasound in continuous mode:

  • Low intensity: 0.1 – 0.5 Watt/cm2.
  • Average intensity: 0.5 – 1 Watt/cm2.
  • High intensity: 1-1.5Watt/cm2.

Pulse mode therapeutic ultrasound:

  • Low intensity: 0.1 – 0.5 Watt/cm2.
  • Average intensity: 0.5 – 1.2 Watt/cm2.
  • High intensity: 1.2 – 3 Watt/cm2.
  • Short treatment time: 3-5 minutes.
  • Average treatment time: 5-10 minutes.
  • Long treatment time: 10-15 minutes.
  • Treatment day: 1-2 times.
  • Total dose for 7-10 days treatment.
