Review Lenovo IdeaPad 510 15IKB: beautiful, screen and stable performance, unfortunately still use HDD – VnReview

Officially launched in Vietnam market in early February this year, Lenovo IdeaPad 510 15IKB is a laptop model aimed at students and students who are in need of equipping a computer for learning and entertainment in basic level.

Despite being out of breath in the mobile segment, Lenovo is still one of the three largest computer manufacturers in the world today besides Dell and HP. The company is constantly launching new laptop models to serve many users from basic to advanced. IdeaPad 510 15IKB is Lenovo's latest product aimed at the popular entertainment laptop segment. With the price of 13.6 million, what will users get from this product?

Design

IdeaPad 510 15IKB's appearance inherited many features from recent IdeaPad generations. It's still a silver gray imitation metal shell, which is carefully processed but Lenovo has used a lighter, smoother color to create an eye-catching feel, close to the aluminum casing.

The entire surface is painted rough, anti-fouling and sweat effectively. The sturdy body does not have a creaking phenomenon when pressing hard on the shell. The seams, edges are carefully processed, well done, with little extra detail. The screen hinge is made solid, allowing maximum angle of 180 degrees to be opened. You should note that this is not a Yoga machine, so don't try to turn the screen backwards without going around the laptop.

The body is light and compact, with a weight of about 2.2Kg and a maximum thickness of 2.6cm, light enough with a 15.6-inch screen lapop to carry around to work, go to school every day. The charger that comes with the device is also very compact in size, only equivalent to the charger of the tablet and the phone should increase mobility.

The ports on the device are at the basic level with 3 USB ports (2 of which are USB 3.0), 1 HDMI port, 1 LAN port, 1 headphone combo port and mic, 1 SD memory card reader, 1 port VGA. The machine does not have an optical drive but instead the hard drive tray. Users can take advantage of this tray to install additional SSDs without the need for additional caddy flying.

The left edge focuses the main connection ports including memory card reader, headphone / mic jack, USB 3.0 port, HDMI, LAN, VGA port, power jack

Next to the right there are 2 more USB ports (1 blue port is USB 3.0), optical drive is omitted, instead of the hard drive tray to facilitate users to upgrade to high-speed SSD

Removing the hard drive tray is very simple when you only need to twist 1 screw at the bottom of the machine. However, distributors in Vietnam have a stamp on this position so when you need to install more hard drives, you need to go to the genuine service center for assistance. In addition, the location of the RAM compartment, WiFi card is also stamped and distributed while the built-in hard drive area has no stickers.

Just turn 1 screw at the bottom of the machine (sticker position) is able to remove the tray to install additional hard drive

The location of RAM mounting and WiFi network card is also stamped by the distributor

Particularly, the internal hard drive bay has no stamps

At the bottom of the machine, Lenovo arranged quite a lot of heat sinks with four large size rubber brackets to create good grip. Stereo speaker system is also located here.

Keyboard and touchpad

Lenovo laptops have traditionally been appreciated for keyboard parts thanks to the good typing experience, high bounce, and reasonable layout keys. On IdeaPad 510 15IKB, this continues to be promoted. The keyboard of the machine is spacious, keys for bouncing, clinging, fast typing are less sticky. Flex phenomenon (key subsidence) when stressed is limited well. Printed letters on sharp keys, beautiful fonts.

The size of a 15-inch laptop allows the machine to add a convenient Numpad numeric key for data entry, quick calculations along with several multimedia keys to control the music player, watch movies. The keyboard has a backlight with enough brightness to work in the night or when there is a lack of light without turning on the table lamp. The default F-key rows will be used to control volume up and down, screen brightness, quick off touchpad … to use F1, F2 you will hold Fn key. In order to adjust, users will have to enter the BIOS.

However, a very unreasonable detail is that the right Shift key is located to the right of the up and down arrow keys, not to the left as usual. This makes the writer constantly manipulate mistakenly causing a lot of discomfort during the typing process. Perhaps Lenovo arranged such keys to make the arrow keys larger, easier to manipulate, but they did not anticipate the consequences. It will take a long time to get used to this incredible key layout.

The mouse-drag table (touchpad) has a relatively large size, enough for comfortable finger manipulation, smooth rough surface, quite sensitive, supports many multi-point operations on Windows 10.

Monitor, webcam and audio

Equipped with 15.6 inch screen Full HD resolution (1920×1080 pixels), the most worthwhile point in IdeaPad 510 15IKB screen is the use of IPS LCD panels. Thus, the display quality of the machine is better than other laptops using only TN panels.

The difference will show up immediately with common tasks like browsing the web, composing documents when images are reproduced pleasant, clearer and most pronounced when viewing photos, watching movies or playing games. IPS panel helps images display vivid, deeper colors, higher contrast. Besides, another big advantage of IPS screen is the wide viewing angle, very little color change in both narrow corners, making viewing easy.

Full HD resolution for fine details, icons, characters, text, images are clear. The screen is sanded, anti-glare, not reflected in the environment or the lights affecting the monitoring of content such as mirror screens.

However, the screen is slightly haunted, so when working with text, browsing the web will cause a bit of discomfort. The maximum brightness of the screen is not high, making it difficult to use the device under strong light sources or when outdoors. At the same time, the screen is pretty much open in the area of the bottom and top right corner so if you watch movies, play games in the dark, you will not feel really comfortable.

The camera on the device has a resolution of only 1MP, equivalent to 720p (1280×720 pixels), so the image quality is medium and temporary enough to serve the basic video call needs. 2 noise filter mics arranged right next to the webcam for good recording capability, effective noise filtering. If you need a higher image quality for live streaming, you should have an external webcam.

The audio system on IdeaPad 510 15IKB is provided by 2 speakers at the bottom and notably when Lenovo also printed an outstanding audio by HARMAN logo on the corner. This is to show that the device uses the technology of the famous sound company Harman Kardon.

In fact, the sound from the two speakers of the device is quite big, clear, not being shy when turned on. However, sound quality is primarily biased towards the mid-range, with the advantage of expressing vocals and speech when watching movies, listening to music or voice chat. The bass is almost non-existent, so if you watch action movies, play games and listen to EDM music, IdeaPad 510 15IKB speakers will be hard to meet. It also has Smart Audio software for users to fine-tune sound but not much improvement, the software interface is not intuitive.

Performance, temperature and noise

At the price of 13.6 million, IdeaPad 510 15IKB hardware parameters are quite good.

CPU: Intel Core i5-7200U (Kaby Lake), 2 4-way core, speed 2.5 – 3.1 GHz, 3 MB Cache, TDP 15 W.

RAM: 8 GB DDR4 dual-channel 2133 MHz (4 GB hard-mounted on motherboard and 4 GB removable); Support upgrade to a maximum of 12GB DDR4 2133 MHz RAM.

GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620 + Nvidia GeForce 940MX (Maxwell), 384 CUDA cores, clocking 1122 – 1242 MHz, 2 GB DDR3 64-bit.

Hard drive: Western Digital HDD Blue 1 TB 5400 rpm.

Connection: Wi-Fi 802.11 a / c (Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165) + Bluetooth 4.1.

Battery: 39 Wh Li-ion.

These parameters are enough to meet the most popular needs from working to studying, editing Photoshop photos or even editing movies with Premiere Pro, playing popular online or offline games. . Playing League of Legends or PES 2017 is also very smooth at the highest graphic setting, Full HD resolution. Of course, heavier games like Battlefield 1, GTA V, FIFA 17, Titanfall 2 will only play okay if the graphics settings are medium or low due to limitations of Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card.

Machine for good Wi-Fi reception capability, especially support 5GHz band and ac WiFi technology to make the most of the high-speed network infrastructure, limit interference compared to the 2.4GHz frequency network often.

Even so, IdeaPad 510 15IKB's performance suffers from a "heavy bottleneck" because it is only equipped with a low-speed HDD 5400 rpm. This makes the operation on the machine has a high delay, the phenomenon of 100% disk on Windows 10 also frequently occurs leading to stagnation, lag the entire system. Equipping an SSD will be the first thing to do on this laptop to have a more complete experience. Especially when the price of the current SSD is not too high as before.

In terms of temperature and noise, during the entire testing process, running the benchmark, playing heavy games continuously for many hours, IdeaPad 510 15IKB still works quite cool and smooth. The device only warms up slightly in the hard drive area and between the keyboard. Heat sinks are arranged on the bottom and slot between the screen and the camera body, so it does not heat the user.

Battery life

To check battery life, I set up for IdeaPad 510 15IKB to use Balanced power mode in Windows 10, screen brightness at about 70%, 70% volume, turn on Wi-Fi connection and give playback Customizing a Full HD movie. The time recorded from the time the device is 100% battery until the machine reports and 10% battery is 3 hours 15 minutes.

In addition, under normal usage conditions, the device is still in Balanced power mode in Windows 10, screen brightness is about 60%, 50% volume, web browsing with Chrome with about 20 tabs. In particular, in addition to the simple tab is the image and the text also has an online music listening tab on Sound Cloud, a tab to watch clips on Youtube in about 1 hour. Machine can stand for more than 4 hours, then report 10% battery.

This is an average battery with the configuration of a 15.6-inch laptop, using Intel U-series, discrete graphics cards. In addition, it takes more than 2 hours to fully charge the battery from 10% to 100% with the included charger.

summary

At the price of 13.6 million, Lenovo IdeaPad 510 15IKB owns enough elements to create an attractive laptop from eye-catching designs, silver shell looks like made from metal, high quality screen , good performance and keyboard for good typing. However, the machine still has limitations that greatly affect the general experience such as low-speed hard drive, Shift key must be unreasonably arranged, making it difficult to manipulate. If you are accustomed to familiarizing with the unusual key layout and hard-to-equip an SSD, this is one of the laptops that is well worth the list.
