Adobe Photoshop offers a total of three methods for cropping images, each of which has a different degree of difficulty and refinement. Get to know each one of them in the article below.

  • Use the Pen tool and the Mask option

  • Crop images with the Pen and the Selection option

  • Get a part of the image with the Magic Wand, Selection or Mask tool

Use the Pen tool and the Mask option

To crop an image with this tool, click Pen and trace the outline of the part of the image you want to isolate (cut). Zoom in for more precision, if necessary:

When you finish the trace (it will appear in a fusion layer), open the window Path (cut) (Path), click the black arrow in the upper right corner and select Save Path:

A window will appear asking you to select which path to save:

The path will appear in a working layer in the window Path (cut); then click on the black arrow in the upper right corner and select Mask and save it in the format EPS, with a preview quality TIFF 8 bits per pixel:

The image can now be imported into another layout application. The cropped part will appear without the background (it will be transparent).

Crop images with the Pen and the Selection option

Follow the same steps described above until Save Path (cut). Then, instead of selecting Mask, select make selection:

A window will appear where you will press the button OK:

In the image, instead of the path, an outline of the selection will appear. In the menu Select choice Inverse:

Select the background layer or the one on which the original image was located:

Press DEL or, in the menu To edit, choose the option Sprimir:

Get a part of the image with the Magic Wand, Selection or Mask tool

Click the tool Magic wand and the area you want to select. This area should be the same color. It can be the background or the figure, as you want:

To add an area to the selection, press the keys ALT + Magic wand simultaneously:

That done, there are two possibilities:

  • To do subtract from selection selected area. In the example, you must first make a selection inversion and delete:

  • To do mask selection effecting Convert the Path (Cut conversion) and Mask and finally save on EPS:

For beginners in Photoshop, it would be good to know the name of the tools and their functions. To do so, read two Adobe tutorials: Photoshop tools gallery, How to use Photoshop tools and Know how to use the pen in Photoshop.
