When it comes to first impressions, the Origin Evo16-S gaming laptop certainly makes a great one. Before you even open this laptop, you are already impressed by its lightness. In fact, it’s one of the lightest gaming laptops we’ve ever taken out of the box.
Although this is hardly an indication of the power inside. For such a portable laptop, the Origin Evo16-S boasts a lot of power, delivering smooth gaming performance. This is, of course, due to its powerful components like the Nvidia RTX 2080 with Max-Q graphics card and features like its beautiful IPS screen with a refresh rate of 144 Hz.

Not surprisingly, all that power in a fairly compact and incredibly light chassis comes at a high price. Our exam setup, for example, will set you back $ 2,880 (about £ 2,180, AU $ 4,190). Certainly, this is one of the most high-end configurations, with an Intel Core i7-9750H processor, a Max-Q NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080, 16 GB of memory and a dual storage configuration with a 500 GB SSD and a 2 TB hard drive.
If that turns out to be a little higher than your price range, you can cut the specs for a more affordable price – but still quite expensive – $ 1,819 (around £ 1,380, AU $ 2,640). This price should offer you a more modest configuration with the same processor, but only an RTX 2060 GPU, 8 GB of memory and 250 GB of storage, which should give you even more game in 1080p.
In the United States, you can get the Alienware m17 with very similar specifications for $ 1,469 (£ 1,899, about AU $ 3,555). The only difference is that the basic Origin Evo16-S configuration gives you a display with a faster refresh rate. You can also get more memory and storage with the base MSI GS65 Stealth for only $ 50 (about £ 38, AU $ 70) more, or Razer Blade 15 for only $ 180 (about £ 136, AU $ 260) extra.
The original Evo16-S can get very hot, especially under the keyboard, but this hot air is blown from the back. (Image credit: Future)
One of the things we appreciate the most about the Origin Evo16-S is its thin and light chassis – for a gaming laptop, which is high quality plastic. Certainly, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword. It makes the laptop very portable, but it also gets very hot, especially under the keyboard, with intensive tasks like games. The good news is that all of this hot air is blown from the back, so you won’t feel it until you get it on your lap.

The cover panel can be personalized with vinyl, which is a good idea when you want to show off your fandom, although that doesn’t necessarily help you if you want something a little chic.
We appreciate the ultra-responsive glass touchpad and the comfortable keyboard of the Origin Evo16-S. (Image credit: Future)
We also like the design: its glass touchpad very soft to the touch and super responsive, and its comfortable keyboard with a decent bounce, a good trip and fun RGB lighting that you can customize.

Not all puppies and rainbows, however. The Origin Evo16-S trackpad buttons, while providing good bounce and good feedback, are too deep and take a little getting used to. The keyboard is a bit fragile, as if it were too easy to break or pop out, and has keys that are too small even under small fingers. The 1080p screen is not particularly impressive. And, the speakers, while offering a very good soundstage, sound a bit square, especially at maximum volume.
Then there is the fingerprint reader. It’s right on the trackpad, which is pretty cool, but we never got it to work. We tried several times to get it to work, setting it up several times, but it could never read our finger properly. At least the facial recognition connection works perfectly.

When it comes to playing with high parameters, you really get what you pay for with the Origin Evo16-S. (Image credit: Future)
Design flaws aside, the Origin Evo16-S impresses in terms of performance. It is a solid gaming machine that can handle AAA games on the highest settings very well without losing frame or stuttering.
We tested this gaming laptop with Gears 5, which has heavy graphics and physical effects and lots of fast action, on ultra, and it played beautifully at 144 Hz. We also played Hitman 2 on all parameters and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on ultra with ray tracing enabled, and the Origin Evo16-S provided smooth gameplay for both. In addition, some games were recorded on the second non-SSD hard drive, but they performed as well as those on the SSD, with no noticeable difference in loading times. When it comes to playing with high parameters, you really get what you pay for with the Origin Evo16-S.
In addition, the battery life of the Origin Evo16-S is comparable, although slightly above average, for a gaming laptop. In our film loop test, it lasted a little longer three hours, about 30 minutes longer than expected. Since gaming laptops are known to have crappy battery life, this is certainly something, especially if you plan to take full advantage of its portability. You can fully charge this thing before you leave home and have a few hours of play while you are on the train.
Buy the Origin Evo16-S if you are looking for a portable gaming laptop that offers a lot of power. (Image credit: Future)
Buy it if …
You want a portable gaming laptop that offers a lot of power.
The best thing about the Origin Evo16-S is that it has a thin and light chassis for games that hides a lot of power inside to handle the most demanding AAA games. We will gladly take this laptop everywhere with us for games on the go.
You’re looking for a laptop with decent battery life.
This gaming laptop has better battery life than most others, lasting about 30 minutes longer than the others in our film loop test. Coupled with its portability, this laptop is an obvious choice if you need a gaming machine when traveling.
You have money to spare.
It’s not the most high-end laptop on the market. However, the Origin Evo16-S isn’t exactly the cheapest either. In fact, our exam setup will cost you just under $ 3000, which is honestly a high price. Be prepared to spend serious money.
Don’t buy it if …
You want to save money.
Alienware m17 (2019) with the same specification will cost you less than the Origin Evo16-S. Even the MSI GS65 Stealth and the Razer Blade 15 could be of better value. If you want to get more for less, there are certainly other great options.
You prefer a more striking game aesthetic.
While you can customize its cover panel with vinyl and customize the keyboard’s RGB lighting, the Origin Evo16-S sports a simpler, more laid-back design. If you want a bolder, game-inspired look, the design of this laptop may not be to your liking.
You need better quality display and better speakers.
Two of the most disappointing things about the Origin Evo16-S are its 1080p display, which is nothing short of extraordinary, and its speakers, which only produce sufficient sound quality. If more dynamic display and better sound quality are important to you, look elsewhere.
