Nokia smartphone sales are “falling free” in the first quarter of 2020

More than 3 years ago, HMD has revived the Nokia smartphone brand and experienced instant success. Sales increased from just 100,000 units in the first quarter of 2017 to over 4.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2017 and thereafter, sales remained stable throughout 2018.

Last year, HMD had a much harder time, sales fell for three quarters, except for the second quarter of 2019, and new data shows that this 2020 is even worse.

Nokia smartphone sales are “falling freely”

Market data collected by Counterpoint Research (via NokiaMob) shows that HMD Global only sold 1.7 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2020. This number decreased by 45.2% over the same period last year. , more than triple the market average for the same period.

To make matters more specific, quarter 1/2020 was the third consecutive quarter that Nokia smartphone sales fell by at least 1 million. This is also the worst business quarter since the second quarter of 2017, when 1.4 million smartphones came to market.

According to Counterpoint research, HMD Global ranked 13th on the list of smartphone manufacturers with the highest sales globally last quarter. This is disappointing because a few years ago, HMD rose to 9th place on this list.

The current Q2 may be even worse

These poor business results were undoubtedly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which began attacking the European market in March 2020. But such a serious decline shows the very poor preparation of the HMD manufacturer.

The company is currently betting heavily on the Nokia 8.3 5G to revive sales, and that will be assessed in the coming summer. In addition, with European smartphone demand still low, the current quarter is likely to be a disaster for Nokia smartphones.
