no 200 MP sensor, Samsung won’t race for megapixels

The Galaxy S22 Ultra shouldn’t be much different from the current Galaxy S21 Ultra in the photo realm, since the new model in 2022 would also use a 108 MP sensor.

On his Weibo account, the famous Ice Universe leaker revealed that he was ” almost 100% confirmed that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will not use a 200 MP sensor. », Contrary to what some leaks suggested.

He adds that Samsung should use on the Galaxy S22 Ultra a third-generation 108 MP main camera, which will likely be called ISOCELL HM4. As a reminder, the Galaxy S20 Ultra used an ISOCELL HM1, while the current Galaxy S21 Ultra uses an ISOCELL HM3. The ISOCELL HM2 is a sensor intended for more affordable smartphones. We can for example find it in the Realme 8 Pro, which we were able to test a little earlier this year.

This confirms previous statements from Ice Universe, which said that the Korean giant could go back to larger sensors rather than prioritizing the number of megapixels. However, Samsung shared a video on Twitter suggesting it was preparing a 200 MP sensor, but he will obviously not be the first to use it next year.

Xiaomi will be the first to use a 200 MP sensor in its smartphones

As is regularly the case, Xiaomi will be the first to use Samsung’s new sensor. Indeed, we had recently learned that the Xiaomi Mi 12 Ultra should be equipped with a gigantic 192 MP camera in 2022. The current Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra uses a 50 MP camera.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra should therefore not follow the same path and settle for a 108 MP sensor. In addition to this main sensor, the smartphone should offer three other sensors, including an ultra wide-angle, a telephoto and a periscope. Nevertheless, the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s camera will be deprived of the ToF sensor next year, since Samsung would not consider it essential.

The Galaxy S22 and S22 + should be the models that will benefit from the biggest improvement in their photo portion. Indeed, Samsung would have chosen to use a 50 MP main sensor, after having used a 12 MP sensor for years. We would also find a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor as well as a 12 MP telephoto lens, which will allow 3X optical zoom.
