Matt Bechberger, owner of Reveni Labs ran a very successful Kickstarter for a fantastically small light meter last year (you can read a review on it by Hamish here)
Smashing their target by 700% a tremendous amount of orders were made. Somehow though, he still delivered on schedule to all backers, a rare gem in the world of Kickstarter for sure. Back at it, Matt has designed the Reveni Labs Spotmeter and has brought the campaign to Kickstarter once again.
It’s not as small as the original Reveni meter but it’s still astonishingly small – especially for a Spotmeter! Those who have previously owned a Spotmeter will know that they can be pretty cumbersome, expensive & a lot of models are getting very old and are past their intended product lifecycle. Something not often thought about too is that generally, Spotmeters aren’t terribly user friendly and can be complex for the layman to just pick one up and use. The Reveni Spotmeter promises to solve these problems and at a very reasonable price point. The meter doesn’t actually have a passthrough viewfinder for you to view the scene with. Which I’ll admit, struck me a bit odd at first. But after reading on the Kickstarter page it actually makes quite a lot of sense. Utilizing the power of your brain collating both the data and the scene in your mind to create a virtual overlay of what’s going on. Pretty nifty. This in part allows the Spotmeter to be the small size it is.

I’m happy to see the batteries needed remain LR44, the same as the previous lightmeter. It sounds pretty trivial I know but some cameras and meters take the most obscure batteries which are always expensive and difficult to find unless shopping online.
At the time of writing, the funding has totally smashed goal but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t back! It’s a great opportunity to support Reveni Labs and get yours sooner than the rest. And honestly, $225 CAD – approximately £130 is a bargain of a price to back this. As someone who wears glasses all the time props to Matt for making sure it works just as well for us too…
