Microsoft Surface Laptop Go review: screen and design

The Surface Laptop Go comes with a bright and crisp 12.4-inch screen, running at a resolution of 1536 x 1024 pixels – you’ll notice that’s a 3: 2 aspect ratio, which makes it ideal for scrolling through long documents and web pages, and less ideal for sitting down and watching big screen movies. We had no issues with the screen, which is easy on the eyes and also supports touch input.

The display bezels aren’t the thinnest we’ve ever seen, but they’re respectably slim, and we also found the build quality in general to be pretty good as well. All of Microsoft’s Surface laptops have a certain style and polish, and the Laptop Go is no different – although some of the materials used are less than premium in this case. The chassis is plastic, not aluminum, for example, and there is no keyboard backlight.

However, for the price you pay, we’re in awe of the aesthetics of the Surface Laptop Go, whether it’s open or closed. The typing experience is comfortable and crisp, while the trackpad achieves the level of responsiveness required for a smooth working experience. Tilting the scale at 1.11 kg or 2.45 lbs, the laptop is light enough to be carried with one hand when you’re on the go.

You don’t get a numeric keypad due to the compact size of the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go, and on the sides there’s a USB-C port, USB-A port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Surface port. Connect – this can be used to connect a variety of devices. There’s a built-in 720p webcam at the top of the monitor, and we’re also excited to see a fingerprint sensor built into the power button for easy connection (although that’s not available on the cheapest configuration. ).

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go Review: Performance and Features

Our review unit came with a 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G1 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage. You can also downgrade that storage to 128GB, with 8GB of RAM, but the cheapest configuration only gives you 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Considering that accessibility is one of the Laptop Go’s strong points, this is a pretty low level in terms of internal specs.

We can only talk about the laptop that we had to test, and it was absolutely no slouch when it comes to browsing the web, streaming music, watching movies, etc. Even when working with large images or multiple browser tabs, the Surface Laptop Go still speeds up without stuttering, although we did notice that the underside of the laptop got very hot on several occasions (maybe part of the reason). for which the battery life here is not amazing).

You won’t be able to run any kind of serious gaming on this laptop, and more demanding tasks like video encoding will likely be extremely slow, but for everyday use it’s fine, thanks to this i5 processor. If you can afford the extra RAM and storage, we’d say it’s worth the upgrade, although in the more expensive configurations, the Surface Laptop Go’s performance doesn’t hold up as well to laptops at one. similar price.

Battery life is reasonable without being spectacular – our two-hour video streaming test at maximum brightness drained the battery by 100-73%, which is roughly 6 hours of video streaming (or more if you dim the screen a little). Usually we also had 6-7 hours, so you might be able to spend a day away from the office – but not much more than that.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go review: price and verdict

The Surface Laptop Go name tells you exactly what to expect from this Windows 10 PC – a lightweight laptop that grips the basics and covers them well. While specs and performance are pretty comparable for the course at these price points, we think the Surface Laptop Go’s build quality, finish, and screen help it stand out from the crowd.

It’s a laptop that is a pleasure to use, and that counts for a lot: the typing experience is comfortable, the 3: 2 screen shows everything well, and with an integrated fingerprint sensor (on both more expensive models) and a built-in webcam, you have everything you need to carry out your daily tasks. It’s a great choice for college students or anyone who needs a lightweight, affordable laptop.

Battery life isn’t fantastic in our experience, and of course the performance isn’t what you’d get from more expensive mid-range or high-end laptops – in terms of raw speed, you can probably find better value elsewhere. However, if the aesthetic of Microsoft Surface appeals to you and you don’t want to spend the extra money, we don’t think you’re going to be disappointed with the Surface Laptop Go.
