Messi set a series of historic records in the European Cup

Contributing to Barca’s 5-1 victory over Ferencvaros, the Argentinian superstar has created a series of remarkable milestones in the history of the Champions League.

Before Ferencvaros, the new team returned to the European Cup after 25 years of absence, Messi and his teammates did not face too much difficulty to win all 3 points at home. The Argentine striker also played impressively with 1 goal and 1 assist.

The successful penalty kick against a Hungarian opponent marked the 16th consecutive year Messi opened fire in the European Cup, the record of the tournament. The M10 also set a record 69 goals in Europe’s most prestigious tournament group stage, the first in history.

El Pulga’s first European Cup goal against Panathinaikos in November of the 2005/06 season. It was also Messi’s only goal in the European campaign that year. In the following season, the South American striker only got 1 goal.

Messi really exploded from the 2007/08 season, with at least 6 goals per season until 2018/19, with the best performance being 12 goals in 2011/12. However, last year saw the decline of the Barca captain with only 3 goals.

The goal against Ferencvaros also helped Messi set a record record against 36 different teams in the European Cup.

The goal just scored is the second strike of Barca striker this season. Before that, M10 opened the 2020/21 season with a goal against Villarreal in La Liga.
