(News 24h) – Mr. Trump and a series of senior officials at the end of his term have been blacklisted by Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced on January 19 that it had included the outgoing US President Donald Trump and other US officials on the list of Iran’s sanctions.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said other US officials on the sanctions list included Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Gina Haspel, former White House National Security Advisor John Bolton.
In addition, former US Special Envoy for Iran Brian Hook as well as the incumbent Special Envoy Elliott Abrams are also listed on the “black list” of Tehran.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the officials had been blacklisted “because of their role in terrorist and anti-human rights activities against Iran and its citizens”.
The inclusion of individuals on the blacklist of sanctions helps the government seize the assets of sanctioned individuals in Iran. However, if they don’t have any assets in the country, the blacklist doesn’t have any value either.
Iran’s sanctions move is more symbolic, but comes in the context that the country has received strong sanctions from the administration of President Donald Trump.
On January 15, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Washington had blacklisted seven entities and two individuals linked to Iran’s Shipping Group (IRISL) and other Iranian maritime entities. In addition, the United States also imposed sanctions on Iranian entities for activities related to common weapons proliferation.
The move is considered difficult for President-elect Joe Biden’s attempt to restore some of Barack Obama-era policies on securing nuclear deals with Iran.
Mr. Biden also plans to bring the US back to the nuclear deal with Iran, which was reached under Obama. The President-elect said President Donald Trump’s maximum pressure policy, including a ban on large-scale oil sales, cannot contain Iran in any area.
