Huge explosion in China, at least 12 people died


At least 12 people were killed and 138 others injured after a gas explosion caused serious damage in Shiwan City, Hubei Province (China), according to an update from the CGTN news website.

According to local officials, the explosion happened at about 6:30 a.m. (local time) in a residential area in Truong Loan district, Shiyuan city.

China Central Television, citing a notice from the authorities, said nearly 140 people were rescued at the scene, of which 37 suffered serious injuries. However, a statement from the Shiwan government office said that “many other people” were still trapped after the explosion.

Photos shared on Chinese social media sites show rescuers wearing protective gear still working at the scene. Many houses were flattened with debris scattered in neighboring areas.

The notice from the Shiyuan government also said the cause of the incident was currently under investigation, while rescue efforts were still underway.

According to ABC News, the gas explosion in Shiwan comes just a day after the leak of toxic methyl formate gas at a chemical processing facility in the southwestern Chinese city of Guiyang, killing eight people. and three others were injured.
