Occasionally, it is possible that flash drives, SD cards or hard drives cannot be formatted because they are corrupted. In this case, the following message will appear: “Windows was unable to complete the format”. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem, which is a tool called DiskPart, available on all versions of Windows.

DiskPart is a Windows feature that allows you to clean, format and fix your flash drive and SD card. Press the keys simultaneously Windows + R. When the Run open, type diskpart and press Enter:

When the black window appears, type list disk and press the key Enter. All partitions on your hard drive and devices plugged into the USB ports, such as USB sticks and SD cards, will be displayed:

Here, you must be very careful. First, find your thumb drive or SD card by size. When it is recognized, type select disk and enter the component number to be formatted. In our case, for example, we will type select disk 2. Attention, as incorrect manipulations in this step may result in data loss from the HD. Follow the instructions exactly:

If you do not know exactly what your flash drive or SD card is, type detail disk to verify that the chosen unit is the correct one. The option detail disk it also allows you to verify that the drive cannot be formatted because it is write-protected:

After making sure that you have selected the correct drive, type clean. If the drive has more than one partition, enter clean all:

When finished with the above procedure, type create partition primary:

Then, type select partition 1:

Then, enter the command active:

To finish, type format fs = fat32 quick. For hard drives, enter format fs = ntfs quick:
