There are multiple Raspberry Pi models available, and all of these versions are capable of running RetroPie and Kodi. However, it should be noted, an Internet connection is essential to installing Kodi in RetroPie. The most popular models available at the time of writing are the Raspberry Pi Zero and the Raspberry Pi 3. Both have Internet access. However, it’s important to note that there’s a Zero version that doesn’t include built-in WiFi. If you have a Raspberry Pi Zero without built-in WiFi, you can use the USB WiFi adapter to connect to the Internet.
RetroPie installation and Internet connection
Thankfully, integrating Kodi with all of the video game emulators in RetroPie is pretty straightforward. Before you get started, you need to download RetroPie and run it on your Raspberry Pi. Once RetroPie has started up, connect it to the Internet. If you own a Raspberry Pi with an Ethernet port, simply connect the Raspberry Pi to the router using an Ethernet cable. The Raspberry Pi will automatically connect to the Internet.
If you have a Raspberry Pi without an Ethernet port, you’ll need to connect over WiFi. To do so, just go to the RetroPie menu and scroll down to WiFi options. Follow the prompts and you’ll be connected to the Internet immediately.
Download and install Kodi
You are now connected to the Internet. The next step is to download Kodi. Navigate back to the RetroPie menu and look for the Retropie controller handle logo. Scroll down RetroPie Setup and choose this option. When you select this option, you will switch to a blue screen with a menu. If you can’t navigate the menu with the controller, plug in a USB keyboard. From there, choose the labeled option Manage Packages. Next, choose Manage Optional Packages.
Here, you will see a list of available optional software packages. Scroll down and select kodi. Next, you will see two options: “Install from binary” và “Package help”. You will see a black screen with white text lines. This is simply RetroPie downloading and installing Kodi.
Restart the EmulationStation
Once the download and installation is complete, you can go back to RetroPie’s main menu. If you scroll through the other available emulators, you’ll notice Kodi doesn’t appear. To show it, you will need to restart the EmulationStation. To do so, just press Start on the controller to pull up the options menu. From there, choose Quit > Restart EmulationStation.
Once the system reboots, you should be able to launch Kodi. You can find it in the section Ports is on the main menu of RetroPie.
