# How to convert IPv4 address to IPv6 and vice versa

IPv6 was developed on the basis of IPv4, aiming to replenish the exhausting IPv4 addresses. With a length of 128 data bits, IPv6 has 2.56 billion IP addresses many times higher than IPv4 and is represented as a hexadecimal cluster separated by a “::”. So if you want to convert the IPv4 address to IPv6 and vice versa, how? Please read the article below.

IP address also known as Internet Protocol Address is a 32-bit (IPv4) or 128-bit (IPv6) number string used to identify a network device on the network to help them identify and communicate with each other. IPv6 was developed on the basis of IPv4 in order to replenish the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. With a length of 128 bits of data, IPv6 has 2.56 billion billion IP addresses, many times that of IPv4. The advent of IPv6 has partly solved the exhausting IPv4 problem to continue Internet operations, and overcame the current disadvantages of IPv4 addresses such as lack of network security mechanisms, the need for encryption and the ability to control. Low quality (QoS). So if in case you need to use the IPv6 protocol, what will you have to do? Check out the following article for instructions on how to convert an IPv4 address to IPv6 and vice versa.

How to convert IPv4 address to IPv6 and vice versa

For example we have IPv4 address range: 192.168.25.234. To convert IPv4 addresses to IPv6 and vice versa we will have 2 main ways as follows:

Option 1: Switch IPv4 to IPv6 manually

With the above IPv4 address, we divide it into four regions, divide each by 16 and record the result with the remainder.

192: 16 = 12 remainder 0
168: 16 = 10 remainder 8
25: 16 = 1 remainder 9
234: 16 = 14 remainder 10

Compare with the HEX value we have:

A = 10
B = 11
C = 12
D = 13
E = 14
F = 15

Based on the result of the above calculation, we combine the result and the remainder (the result first, the remainder) will be: C0A8: 19EA

Thus we will have the IPv6 address of 192.168.25.234 is C0A8: 19EA

Since the IPv4 address is only 32 bits, while the IPv6 address is 128 bits, we are missing 96 bits. This 96bit is a sequence of 0. Therefore, to write correctly, we will have 2 ways of writing as follows:

How to write fully 0000: 0000: 0000: 0000: 0000: 0000: C0A8: 19EA

Shortened way of recording :: C0A8: 19EA

To convert IPv6 addresses to IPv4 we do the following:

C0 = (12 x 16) + 0 = 192
A8 = (10 x 16) + 8 = 168
19 = (1 x 16) + 9 = 25
EA = (14 x 16) + 10 = 234

Thus we will have IPv4 address of C0A8: 19EA is 192.168.25.234

Method 2: Convert IPv4 to IPv6 online
