To test the VPN connection Encrypted or not, if you are using a Mac you can ask the help of Cocoa Packet Analyzer, or if you are using a Windows computer, you will have to use Wireshark to analyze the network.
Check the VPN connection is encrypted or not on Mac
To check if the VPN connection on your Mac is encrypted, download it first Cocoa Packet Analyzer go to Mac and install, then run the tool. On the boot screen you will see 4 large buttons as shown below.

Click to select Capturing button to start capturing network traffic images. If you save a session, it is called a trace file and you can re-open it after using the second button. However, if your purpose is just to see if the data is encrypted or not, there is no need to save it. Any photos.
Before capturing, access and select Preferences to set up how to capture data. Click the button Capture in the top corner and the only setting you need to check here is Capture Interface.
First click knotRefresh located in the right corner of the list box, on the screen you will see a few options. Just select the IPv4 option with the address attached to which you need it.
There is no need to choose the option with the 127.0.0.1 address. If you want to select the option with the IP address of the connection you are using, go to System Preferences, then click Network.
Click on the connection with the green dot icon in the list on the left pane, then check the IP address in the right pane. As you can see in the example below the 192.168.1.x address to match with the en0 – IP4 – 192.168.1.68 option in the list menu in the program.
Next close the Capture Preferences window and return to the main window.
On the main window, click Capturing and a new popup will appear on the screen, where you can set up a few settings and start capturing.
Before clicking Start buttonYou need to note a few things below:
First close all running programs and applications on the Taskbar and open only the browser window. Taking a snapshot of network traffic will record tons of data, so close all programs, applications and kill processes running in the background then click. Start button.
After clicking the Start button, it will immediately load one or two web pages. Click select Stop to re-shoot in seconds. This is the ideal solution to get web addresses entered on the browser tab, then simply press Enter to load the following page and start capturing.
After clicking select Stop, on the screen you will see the window as below:
All you need to do now is scroll through the list upwards, in table format, and see the data you see in the box in the lower right-hand side, highlighted as in the example. Just press the down arrow key and look at the change data in the bottom corner to check the VPN connection is encrypted or not.
If the VPN connection is encrypted, each line that you scroll through will display data as shown in the picture above, it is just random characters and the user cannot read any data.
Here’s an example of an unencrypted connection, such as when you’re not connected to a VPN:
As you can see in the picture above, the user can read a lot of data when the connection is not encrypted. You can see in the example that Mac users and Safari users visit aseemkishore.com and many other data.
Not all packets are readable on an unencrypted connection, but with most packets you can see the actual data, HTML code, protocol headers, and more. On an encrypted connection, packets cannot be read.
Check whether the VPN connection is encrypted or not on a Windows computer
The steps to check if the VPN connection is encrypted or not on a Windows computer is similar to the steps on a Mac, except on a Windows computer using a different program called Wireshark.
Download Wireshark to your computer and install it here: Wireshark
After downloading and installing Wireshark, open the tool and on the screen you will see the window as below:
Just like on a Mac, the first step you need to do is choose the interface (network interface) for which you want to capture data. Click to select Interface List and a list of network interfaces will be displayed on the screen. With Wireshark you can see the amount of data transferred per interface, which makes it easier to see the connections.
Access and check the box next to the appropriate interface, then click Close. Next what you need to do now is click Start button (located under the Interface List button), and no need to change any other options. After completing the capture process, you will see a window like the one below:
Alternatively you can expand the window to full screen, then adjust the bottom frame and the upper frame accordingly, and you can see the data in the same format as on Cocoa Packet Analyzer on Mac.
Scroll through the list at the top and if the data is completely “meaningless” your connection is encrypted. If you can read any word or text, then the data is not encrypted. Use arrow keys to browse through data quickly.
