High-end features, mid-range price

Up to now, OnePlus has been competing in the wireless headphone market for a long time, with product lines like OnePlus Buds or OnePlus Buds Pro. And just last year, the company launched an excellent mid-range headset line, the OnePlus Buds Z. Following the success of this product line, the company launched a second version called the OnePlus Buds Z. OnePlus Buds Z2.

OnePlus Buds Z2 is significantly upgraded in a few aspects compared to its predecessor. Specifically, the new version of the headset is equipped with a pair of dynamic drivers with a larger size of 11mm, supports active noise cancellation and has a longer battery life. Although not much has changed in terms of design, OnePlus Buds Z2 has a new color version called Obsidian Black.

Although sold in the mid-range price segment, Buds Z2 possesses many high-end features, and there are not many points worth complaining about. How will the latest version of OnePlus’ wireless headphones compete with other similar product lines? The answer will be in today’s article.

OnePlus Buds Z2: Design

OnePlus Buds Z2 owns a design language that bears many similarities to its predecessor, so much so that even the feeling of wearing on the ear is identical. The pair of headphones use the same tip type, the same circular touch surface, and the same short stem design. The Buds Z2 provide a comfortable wearing experience and were able to fit in my ears for a long period of time without causing discomfort.

And like its predecessor, the Buds Z2’s charging box also has a compact and minimalist design. The box is shaped like a capsule with a clamshell lid.

Buds Z2 does not support wireless charging, but still possesses fast charging technology. After pressing the Bluetooth pairing button on the back, the front of the box will flash white. The pair of headphones support Google Fast Pair technology, allowing users to easily pair with compatible Android devices.

Regarding the control array, users can interact with different functions of the pair of headphones through different touch operations. By default, 1-tap will play/pause music, double-tap will skip to the next song, and 3-tap will go back to the previous song. Long press for 1 second will switch between noise cancellation mode and crosstalk listening mode, while long press for 3 seconds will switch between the 2 recently used source devices. The pair of headphones does not support operations to change the volume level.

The OnePlus Buds Z2 has an IP55 water and dust resistance standard. This allows you to comfortably use the headphones in the rain or when going for a run without having to worry about much.

OnePlus Buds Z2: Sound Quality

OnePlus has equipped the headset with a pair of 11mm dynamic drivers, the same driver that it uses for the OnePlus Buds Pro product line. And similar to headphones with larger-than-average driver sizes, the Buds Z2 are a pair of bass-biased headphones. Although the sound quality is inclined to the dark, the Buds Z2 still offers a comprehensive audio experience thanks to its ability to represent other sound bands relatively evenly.

If you are not really satisfied with the characteristic sound quality of the headset, you can also adjust it through the EQ settings in the companion app.

OnePlus Buds Z2: Companion App

The Buds Z2 has compatibility with a companion app called HeyMelody. Downloading and installing this app on your iPhone or Android devices will provide you with independent battery level information for each earbud and charging case. In addition, the application also allows users to change the touch operations, customize the strength of the noise cancellation function and perform a test of the fit of the pair of headphones when worn.

Buds Z2 supports Fast Pair feature developed by Google. With this feature, users can easily pair the headset with compatible devices. The pair of headphones is also compatible with Google’s Find My Buds feature, allowing users to easily find the location of the headset when needed.

OnePlus Buds Z2: Noise cancellation function

One of the advantages of the Buds Z2 when competing with other product lines in the same price segment is the pair of headphones that support active noise cancellation. The noise canceling technology of the pair of headphones, although not the most effective on the market, still provides a good experience during use.

The Buds Z2’s noise cancellation has a good performance on low-frequency noises, such as washing machines, air conditioners, and so on. In addition to noise cancellation, the pair of headphones also support crosstalk listening technology, allowing users to clearly hear the sounds around them without having to take off the pair of headphones.

OnePlus Buds Z2: Battery life

According to the manufacturer, Buds Z2 has a theoretical battery life of about 7 hours, and a total of 38 hours if the charging box is included. The above battery life is estimated in case you don’t use noise cancellation. When used with this function, the battery life of the pair of headphones will be reduced to 5 hours (with 27 hours of total battery life if included in the box).

The overall battery life of the Buds Z2 is slightly longer when compared to the Galaxy Buds 2, but Samsung’s headphones last longer with each charge cycle. Meanwhile, AirPods 3 has a total battery life of 30 hours, but this line lacks ANC noise cancellation feature.

Buds Z2 has a fairly fast charging time, with only 10 minutes will bring 2 hours of usage time. The headphones are fully charged in just 90 minutes. Similar to other product lines in the same price segment, Buds Z2 does not support wireless charging.

summary

The OnePlus Buds Z2 is not a perfect pair of Bluetooth headphones, but these minus points are insignificant compared to the money and high-end features that the product brings.

The pair of headphones has a strong sound quality, with ANC noise cancellation, and the performance is on par with the high-end product lines on the market. In addition, the product can also be controlled easily through simple touch operations. Buds Z2 has a long battery life, allowing users to listen to music comfortably for a long time.

Overall, the Buds Z2 is a good choice if you’re looking to buy a pair of Bluetooth headphones at an affordable price, while possessing many modern features.
