Importance of the digestive system

The digestive system is not just used to digest food. Recent research shows that, in reality, it has a very important role in general health of the individual. Without a healthy digestive system, the baby will not be able to absorb all the nutrients it needs to develop physically and neurologically and grow healthy.

About 80% of the immune system of an individual is found on the wall of the large intestine. Thus, if the digestive system is not in optimal working condition, it can affect the baby in several ways, including his weight when growing, nutritional condition, physical and cognitive development, as well as his emotions.

Difficult to digest foods

There are some foods, however, that are very difficult for babies to digest. These products need lots of energy and nutrients digestion and can also cause allergic reactions capable of affecting the conditions of the intestinal walls and, consequently, the baby’s health in general.

Enzymes in the small intestine begin to appear at about nine months and peak at 18 months. The lack of these enzymes and the difficulties to properly digest certain types of food can interfere with the absorption of nutrients and worsen the baby’s health conditions.

Foods to Avoid

The diet of a baby who is starting to consume solid foods should be based on fruits, vegetables, meat and cereals. The secret is to introduce food gradually, until the child starts to eat like everyone else in the house. On the other hand, it is necessary to avoid the consumption of soft drinks, fried foods, sugar, coffee and, at most, processed products.

Foods that can cause allergies

Lay people often say that cow’s milk, eggs, nuts, seafood and some fruits should not be given to the baby because of the risk of causing allergies. In fact, situation is contrary. Since the beginning of solid feeding, babies should consume this type of food precisely to reduce the risks of developing allergies. The same is true for bread and other foods that contain gluten, which should be introduced to decrease the risk of intolerance to the substance.

Salt consumption

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children under 7 years of age consume no more than 3 grams of salt daily. For babies under one year of age, consumption should be suppressed entirely.

Processed foods

The chemical processes of elaboration and conservation through which processed foods cause loss of nutrients and absorption of unhealthy spices. Therefore, its introduction into the baby diet is not recommended.
