Classbook – electronic textbook still a concept quite new in Viet Nam. Just introduced by Education Publishing House in June 2013, the product includes an 8-inch tablet computer that integrates digital content of 12 textbooks from grade 1 to grade 12 with the aim of replacing the textbook usually at all levels. However, in addition to reducing the weight of the book bag that the students are using every day, what is the good classbook for parents to pay nearly 5 million to own it?
Classbook has been sold at over 100 stores nationwide. Currently users can directly order Classbook e-books on the website of JSC e-Education Book (EDC), hotline or buy at authorized stores. Classbook has a built-in textbook, exercises from grade 1 to grade 12, using Android operating system has been adapted to students' learning, dual-core processor chip, 1GB RAM, memory in 16GB and has a microSD memory slot … and sells for about 4.8 million.
Here are the quick reviews of VnReview about Classbook electronic textbooks.
Classbook electronic textbook
Design and feel
Considering the overall exterior, the machine has a fairly simple design. The only highlight is the two dark borders on the top and bottom edges where the back reminds the design that was on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet.
Classbook owns an 8.0-inch screen with a 4: 3 aspect ratio that is equivalent to a traditional textbook. This is the hinge in the design that the manufacturer has calculated so that the students can use it freely like normal paper textbooks.
With just one machine weighing 500g instead of the whole textbook, the heavyness of the daily backpacks they had to carry before was greatly reduced. However, compared to most similar sized tablets, this weight is not small or even somewhat heavy. It is also much heavier than a textbook every day, so elementary school students quickly get tired. Therefore, it comes with an extra cover, which protects the device, and can rotate and stand on the table. Moreover, this leather case also makes the grip feel stronger when the machine is "bare" because the edges of the machine are slightly beveled and the back is slightly slippery.
Classbook shell material is made of plastic similar to the "Chinese goods" tablet costing about 2 million dongs being sold in the market, when pressing on the back of the machine is slightly subsided, tapping into the chatter Low-grade sensory products.
On the back of the machine we experienced gray paint like silver on motorbikes. Logo of Education Publisher together with machine name, device code (ID) is quite clearly printed. This ID number is very important in confirming the machine but you do not need to remember this string of characters because it will automatically be recognized when connected to the management program (Classbook Manager) installed on the computer.
In the lower left corner is a small hole where the speaker is played. The speaker placed in a suspended position causes the device to lose symmetry and is easily obstructed during handling, resulting in the sound not reaching the listener's ear in the best way. Even when not covered, I found that the speaker of the device is not very loud, the bass is small, sometimes it seems to be shy when increasing the volume to the maximum.
The upper part is cramped because it contains most of the Classbook's communication ports, this design is like many cheap tablet computers on the market. These communication ports do not have lids, so they are easy to attach to dust and look uncomfortable.
The top edge from the left includes: microSD card slot, reset hole, charging jack, HDMI connector, microUSB port, mic hole, headphone jack ….
The left side has a power button and volume up and down buttons
For me, the on / off button on the left side is not convenient for operation. If you put it on the right side, when you use the left hand to hold the phone and open the case, the right hand presses this button more convenient.
The right side has no slots or buttons
The bottom and other edges are rounded and quite smooth
The screen border is a little big but it is suitable for students to avoid "touching" when holding. The screen of the machine has a glossy mirror surface that is easy to get fingerprints, when used much, it will show up streaks of smudges and difficult to clean.
The manufacturer said the screen has a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, using IPS technology for true, natural display colors and wide viewing angles of up to 178 degrees. However, using a tablet instead of a textbook will certainly affect students' eyesight. In fact, when adjusting the brightness to the maximum, I found that the screen quality is only average when used in areas with strong light or outdoors because the brightness, contrast and anti-glare capability are not good. In the classroom or indoor space, use it well, sometimes affected by glare.
8-inch screen, 4: 3 aspect ratio
As a learning device, the device does not have a webcam, but I think there should be an extra stylus to facilitate writing, drawing or underline students.
Currently, the device must be used through management software Classbook Manager installed on the computer (Windows support, Mac OS not supported) to download and manage content. In the near future, the WiFi connection feature will be opened to download content directly from the bookstore.
Users currently have only one option to purchase this device and all 12 books from grade 1 to grade 12, the vendor does not sell books as well and does not allow any other device to use this volume. The content must be used on a separate device causing doubts about Classbook's monopoly. The features of a tablet are almost locked. If you use Root and install another ROM, it will no longer be a Classbook but will become a normal tablet.
On the other hand, each machine is used for one student, when it is inconvenient for parents to teach their children, is it necessary to buy more equipment? Is such a non-premium device sufficiently durable to follow a student from grade 1 to grade 12?
Accessories and warranty
Comes with the device is charger, headset, microUSB connection cable, leather case.
Wired headphones are soft, anti-tangle and bad in form. The plastic part has a rough, light, low quality feel. The design also does not round the ears and should wear uncomfortable feeling with relatively low sound quality.
The synthetic leather cover provides both protection against impact and can be rotated and supported on the table.
Machine warranty for 12 months.
"Ecosystem" and content
Classbook integrates 310 textbooks, exercises from grade 1 to grade 12 with more than 20 learning support applications. The content of textbooks must be up to the standards and comply with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. In addition, they are encrypted to avoid being tampered with and cannot be removed for use on other devices. When there are reprints or updates, the device will be quickly downloaded without cost. Users do not have to worry about losing books that have been downloaded by the ID of the device that has been confirmed, when the machine is broken or changed, it will automatically sync again.
The content of the book is in the form of a .pdf file, the feature of automatically viewing the text when zooming in is not available, resulting in a frame overflow phenomenon, taking 1-2 seconds after releasing the finger to bring the content to a resolution highest. This phenomenon is not on specialized reading machines such as Kindle, Nook …
Zoom in content with a frame overflow
Content of music books, English (from grades 3 to 12), language arts, embedded features with user interaction or multimedia features such as: emitting speakers, reading. In addition, users can highlight, write notes, take multiple choice tests …
It also provides a set of learning tools including: dictionaries, timetable creation tools, computers and will continue to be updated on Classbook Store…
… feelings about use
An Apple iBook-like bookshelf interface appears when turned on. On the bookshelves are the types of textbooks arranged in turn according to the classes. The bookshelves are always fixed vertically without being able to rotate horizontally, do not allow zooming, so it sometimes makes it difficult to find books because there are small name books and submerged letters but the labels are quite similar. For example, the book "Chemistry Exercise 8" has a small white "exercise" word that is difficult to see.
Users have 2 ways to switch back and forth between the shelves of the bookshelf: how to click on the edge of the side border (support range is only 1cm wide) or click the arrow on either side of the matte border bar at the bottom of the display.
In addition to the 3 function buttons commonly found on the Android operating system (Back, Home button and task button are waiting) along with the display of time status and battery level, Classbook's book price interface also has 2 buttons at top right corner and 1 button on the left corner. The jagged button on the left corner is the Settings button, the user can adjust the brightness, turn the silent mode on and off, turn on and off the screen rotation mode, set the screen brightness time and set the information label. personal. Clicking on the magnifying glass button will display a book search box in the price, just press the number 7 and then click on the magnifying glass below to quickly show all the 7th grade books and books with the title containing the number 7 … Next to this button is the button with 3 dashes icon. This button is a drop-down menu containing book titles from grade 1 to grade 12 (including advanced books) and then learning apps and commonly used books. I found this button very useful when I want to quickly move to the book compartment of each layer or to the applications needed.
During the use process, I found the device to have a bit of lag when opening or flipping through the pages quickly. Opening a book and zooming in will see it take about 2 seconds to display in a clear state. When using the book search feature, the device will give results after 1 to 3 seconds depending on the content of the search and the results listed down, surfing the finger to pull the screen will see the device slightly jerky. I easily recognize this because I have experienced many different tablets.
The ability of the machine to interact with the user is an advantage but not complete because it is poor. When opening a page of a book, users who touch it once to the surface of the page will display two toolbars above and below. The toolbar below includes the main menu with features from left to right including: forward page arrow, button to return to bookshelf, interactive button, active action button, multimedia feature button, button Other apps and arrow shapes flip the next page. If the book page has interactive content or multimedia content, these buttons will light up as shown below, when activated it will show a yellow line below, if the page does not have these features, the buttons that will fade.
For example, in music books in grade 1 there are many songs and each song is usually digitized in the form of 2 pages of books with its own purpose. Page 1 is the title of the song, the author and the lyrics are written in paragraphs as a poem, below the illustration. When using the interactive feature, you can select each piece of music to listen to sample music or you can click on the title or the first paragraph to listen to it from the beginning. Page 2 adds music, the notes of these songs and the interactive function will play the entire song from the beginning, but cannot hear each paragraph like page 1 but the students have illustrations and learn more about notes music. Can search for content related to musicians or other related songs. You can write notes on content pages.
English books from grade 3 to grade 12 are integrated with standard spoken voices of native speakers to enhance listening ability, students can look up or hear the pronunciation of any word or paragraph by touching the word that on the screen.
In language arts, students can also listen to the standard reading voice of the teacher, learn the author's biography, take a multiple-choice test or learn through instructions for sensing the text.
In grade 6 literature, the texts are sometimes annotated by author biography, have multiple-choice questions or references as teachers' reading voices, related songs … and guidance on analyzing sensory receptors copy.
A little more about these interactions: author biography is the basic information about the author including the illustration image, the font displayed in this frame (this frame is quite small) is a thin font type , close to each other, not zoomed in, so looking at it is unclear, feeling a little confused. This information is mainly taken from Wikipedia.org and the internet. Multiple choice questions will click on a frame with the current question showing how many questions, questions above and below are the answers made in the form of multiple choice, below are the properties Function: switch to the previous question – after, the answer and the end. If you click the program answer, give the correct answer of that question, if you click the end of the program, the confirmation message will be completed, if ok, show the results table of all questions in that lesson – which shows whether your choice is true or false and has a review of each question.
A computerized quiz can be done in one of two test modes or practice to help students assess the level of comprehension as well as teachers and parents can follow this test result.
However, as mentioned above, the ability to interact and mutimedia in the book content is small. Books that need these contents such as geography, biology, history … are not yet available.
If I use it continuously, I can see that it can be used for about 7 hours, so it is enough for a school session.
It takes about 4.5 hours to fully charge the battery.
Using continuously for about 1 hour, I found the hottest area is at the surface edge of the upper right corner of the screen, other areas on the surface are almost cool.
Investing VND 4.8 million for a tablet with added educational content is still too expensive compared to the cost of buying paper books and learning tools. In addition to the "chat" price, the new device quality is the problem that consumers are most interested in. The current quality of the Classbook has yet to make users happy.
The device is a bit heavier than elementary school students, especially children in grades 1 and 2, but it is a bit small and monotonous for high school students. Should the manufacturer provide more options for equipment and improvements? Good quality of equipment as well as additional application packages that allow users to choose the solution that best suits them?
