Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky complains about Europe “neglecting” Ukraine in the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Speaking at a special ceremony celebrating the 230th anniversary of the first Constitution in Poland in Warsaw, the President of Ukraine complained about the unfulfilled EU promise to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine under the agreement.

Specifically, Ukraine has 2 agreements to buy vaccines from Europe, but the EU only responded that, Kiev will only receive the vaccine by the end of this year, that is, the third quarter of 2021.

“My country has not received anything yet. I believe, this is very unfair” – President Zelensky reflected.

Less than a million people have been vaccinated in Ukraine to date, he added. With a population size of 40 million people in this country, according to Mr. Zelensky the number of less than 1 million people is very small.

This is not the first time Ukraine has criticized Europe for the delay in implementing the contract to provide COVID-19 vaccine to the country. In January this year, he also issued criticism for failing to secure any vaccines produced by the West.

Then, in a conversation with Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Kiev, Mr. Zelensky announced more cooling. Kiev affirmed that the EU should “pay more attention” to the countries in the Eastern European region on the issue of the European joint purchase and supply of vaccines to those seeking to develop closer relations with Brussels. including Ukraine and Moldova.

In addition to the vaccine issue, Ukrainian President Zelensky has repeatedly called for Europe to take stronger measures to protect Ukraine, prevent an “escalation” in the eastern border such as imposing sanctions on Russia, and concluding. to load Ukraine into NATO …

So far, Ukraine has received vaccines from the COVAX program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is implementing programs to buy vaccines from China. However, this country does not accept to buy Russian vaccines. Authorities in Ukraine did not accept Russian vaccines on the grounds of “production in the region is not recognized”, “lack of medical evidence” … Mr. Zelensky said that Russia must vaccinate the population of before providing this vaccine to other countries to ensure the effectiveness of this vaccine.

But contrary to Kiev’s expectations, the reality is that Europe is less likely to do more for Ukraine. The European joint vaccination program is having difficulty because of the delay in production of the vaccine by pharmaceutical companies as well as the potential for the vaccine to cause side effects. Inside the EU also divided about whether to continue to use this vaccine or not.

To date, the EU pharmaceutical regulator is considering licensing the Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V. The assessment is expected to be completed by the end of May.
