[DIY small classroom]Standard operating procedure for oil change

A

According to the different engine types, the choice of brand and different viscosity oil can make the engine noise quieter and more dynamic.
There are many users who like to change the oil by themselves, because the operation is simple and you can enjoy the fun of DIY.

Questions about oil brand? It’s true to use original oil!

▲YZF-R25 is the model for changing the oil today. The side cover is composed of two pieces of blue/silver, which makes people look very three-dimensional. The silver part on the front of the engine is cleverly covered with the exhaust pipe, engine oil drain bolt, oil filter, etc.

A

The replacement of engine oil is the most typical daily maintenance work, and the owner can easily complete it. Engine oil exists like blood, lubricates pistons and gearboxes, cools the heat generated by combustion, seals and compresses, etc. Regular oil replacement is the only way to keep the engine in good condition. Whether it is a motorcycle or a supercar, it is essential.

A

Depending on the age and mileage, the time to change the oil is also different. The oil will be affected by oxidation in the engine. The time to change the oil depends on the vehicle model and the conditions of use. In other words, it depends on the mindset of each owner. Replacing expensive motor oil in a short time is sufficient protection for the engine, but it may be a burden to your wallet. Yes. If you often change cheap oil or counterfeit oil, the quality of the oil cannot be guaranteed, which may affect the durability and wear of the engine itself.

A

From this point of view, the use of engine oil recommended by the car manufacturer is the safest and most reliable. The original engine oil is based on rigorous testing. The advantage of genuine oil is its durability and reasonable price. Regardless of the performance of lubrication, cooling and sealing, it is all your car needs.

A

When you are troubled with which oil to choose, you should be right to choose the original oil.

A

Focus
Regardless of displacement or usage, engine oil needs to be changed regularly.
The original engine oil is the most reassuring because its performance and quality are proven.

Change the oil every 5,000 kilometers or once a year

▲The side cover is fixed with one upper and two lower hexagon bolts, so first fix the two lower bolts. Remove the lower bolt before removing the upper bolt. If the wrench is hung on the hexagonal hole, if there is mud in the hexagonal hole or stuck in the rain, it is necessary to remove the mud first and then loosen it to avoid disassembly.

A

The first change of engine oil for YAMAHA YZF-R25 is usually 1 month or 1000 kilometers, 5000 kilometers for the second time, and every 5000 kilometers or annually for the third time and thereafter. If you do not replace the oil filter, the amount of oil required is 1.8L, if you have to replace the oil filter, you need 2.1L.

A

For a knight who travels frequently, 5000 kilometers may be reached in a blink of an eye. On the other hand, a holiday knight who rides only a few times a month may have less than 5,000 kilometers per year. In any case, it will be time to change the oil.

A

With the convenience of buying accessories and supplies online, more and more users are choosing DIY to change the oil. However, you need to prepare a waste oil collector in advance, remove the engine oil drain bolt, and the old oil will flow out. Changing the oil is one of the simplest maintenance tasks, because you only need to completely drain the old oil, then tighten the oil screw, and then put in a new amount of oil.

A

However, seemingly simple work also has his operating standards to avoid accidents caused by improper operation.

A

Focus
The oil should be changed at least every year, even if the mileage is low.
Although changing the oil is a simple task, it also requires standard operating procedures.

After draining the oil, visually check the condition of the oil drain screw

▲Slide the side cover of the silver shroud by sliding the claw part of the housing, but pay attention to the strength and direction when removing to avoid damaging the connection between the side covers of the shroud. After removal, the oil drain bolt on the bottom of the engine is clearly visible. Most of the oil drain bolts face down at the bottom of the oil pan, while the YZF-R25 oil drain bolts face forward at the left.

A

The oil drain bolt used to drain the engine oil is to allow the engine oil to drain out as much as possible. It is installed in the lower part of the engine (so that no old oil remains in the engine). There are also models that are tightened from just behind the bottom of the engine, or from the front of the engine, such as the YZF-R25 in the prototype.

A

In both cases, the most important thing is to “see” the oil drain bolts to know their specific locations. If your work environment does not allow you, you may not want to lie on the ground and replace it. Therefore, you can explore the position of the bolt and use a ratchet wrench or socket wrench on the head of the bolt to check whether the bolt is firm or not, and then apply the force to the tool without error. At this time, improper operation may damage the hexagonal part of the bolt and Cause the tool to fall off, cause the bolt to be damaged or hurt yourself.

A

▲When removing the side cover of the shroud, you can use a ratchet wrench and a socket wrench to cover the side cover of the shroud from the side to improve operability. In the case of R25, you only need to remove the three hexagon socket bolts. It is best to loosen the drain pipe bolt from the left side of the vehicle. You need to pull the tool counterclockwise upward in your direction, and you need to apply a little force when pulling.

A

Usually the oil bolt of YZF-R25 is hidden in the side cover of the shroud, or you can use an extension tool to loosen the oil bolt. However, if you take the time to remove the front cover in advance, you can clearly see the position of the oil bolt, and you can easily use a socket wrench or ratchet wrench to disassemble and assemble it.

A

You can also observe when it is loosened when you loosen the bolt, so that it will not fall into the waste oil container.

A

Focus
Before loosening the oil drain screw, please confirm the disassembly position visually.

The sleeve must fit firmly on the oil bolt.

Please tighten the first few turns of the screw

▲After draining the old oil, clean the oil bolt with parts cleaner and replace it with a new gasket, and tighten it to the bottom of the bolt with your fingers first. Another important point here is that visual inspection is very important, because if the old gasket is stuck to the side of the engine, it can be found through inspection before tightening.

A

▲The new gasket will fit the engine and prevent oil leakage after the bolt contacts the oil pan. When the bolt is screwed in with your finger, and then retightened with a tool, the gasket will feel flattened. You will find that when it is all squashed, there is no need to tighten it again.

A

The biggest advantage of the oil drain bolt when changing the oil is when tightening the bolt. When any one bolt is tightened, the first two or three threads and the thread fit are crucial. At this time, if the tool is used to tighten the bolt and tilt and continue to tighten, the bolt will be engaged at the wrong angle, resulting in the bolt cannot be fixed.

A

To avoid this error, it is important to tighten the bolts with fingertips instead of tools at the beginning of bolt engagement. Is such that. If it is a finger, you will find a slight anomaly when the bolt that is about to enter an angle stops moving forward.

A

However, if a tool such as a ratchet wrench or socket wrench is used to apply force away from the bolt, the torque applied to the bolt will be greater than when it is moved by hand, and you will not notice the tightness of the bolt.

A

Because the engine side of many models uses a combination of aluminum alloy and steel oil drain bolts, the internal thread of the engine body is damaged, requiring cumbersome and expensive repairs such as oil pan replacement and internal thread tapping.

A

In order to avoid such pain, be sure to use your fingers to turn the oil bolt a few times, and then use the sleeve to tighten the bolt. Of course, before this, be sure to replace the oil bolt washer with a new one and tighten it again, and clean the bolt thread with a parts cleaner.

A

▲YAMAHA original YAMALUBU advanced synthetic motor oil has high requirements on the engine, such as when riding in summer. The high-quality chemical synthetic oil specially formulated for motorcycles has a low evaporation capacity even under high-temperature and high-load conditions. The outer packaging has been updated in April 2019. The picture shows the old product.

A

▲After adding about 1.6L of engine oil, straighten the body and check the amount of engine oil inside the engine through the engine oil window. Check, as long as it is between the upper and lower scale lines, there is no need to increase the upper limit, then let the engine run at idle for two or three minutes and check again. If the oil level is lower than the lower limit, add the appropriate amount of engine oil. .

A

Focus

When tightening the drain screw, tighten it by hand before using the tool.

If it doesn’t feel smooth, don’t lock it, try again after removing the screws.
