Discovered lifeless Gatineau: the baby would have been mummified

The baby found lifeless on Saturday in a Gatineau apartment was reportedly mummified by her mother for months so she could play with the small, ribboned body as if it were a doll.

According to TVA Gatineau / Ottawa, the person arrested in this case, Karoline Berger, is indeed the mother of the infant found in housing on rue des Étudiants in the Hull sector.

Known to police circles, the 26-year-old woman is accused of committing contempt, indecency or indignity towards the corpse or the remains of a newborn baby.

“It’s a bit out of the ordinary. It takes someone who, at the time of the events, did not have all his mind, ”said his lawyer, Me Jacques Belley.

Karoline Berger has been evicted on more than one repossession of housing she occupied for defaults, notably in April 2017 and September 2020, by the Office de habitation de l’Outaouais, formerly known as the Office municipal d’habitation de Gatineau. She would therefore have holed up in the emergency shelter for the homeless installed at the Robert-Guertin arena.

The last known address of the accused, an apartment on rue Lamarche in the Gatineau sector, still seemed empty on Thursday when the QMI Agency visited, a neighbor confirmed. The place would also have been combed with a fine comb by the investigators.

The Crown opposed his release pending a psychiatric assessment. A criminal liability report must also be submitted within 30 days.

“After her report, if Madame could find a place with someone responsible, we could release her,” said Me Belley.

His next court appearance is scheduled for February 19. Until then, she will be kept at the Pierre-Janet mental health hospital.
