Disable programs that slow Windows 10 from starting

Automatic start of programs / applications in Windows 10

Perhaps you have already installed a program that starts on its own after restarting your computer?

Some publishers force users a bit of a hand by running the program as soon as the computer starts. For some software, such as an antivirus utility, backup software, this may be legitimate.

But for many, it’s totally useless… The automatic start of Skype, OneDrive (the cloud file storage solution; I personally preferred to delete OneDrive …), Dropbox, Spotify etc … I was not interested at all and I therefore preferred to stop their automatic start.

Why disable automatic execution of a program?

The main reason for disabling the automatic startup of applications or software is the performance gain and faster startup of your Windows!

As explained in our tutorial to optimize the performance of Windows 10, this automatic launch at startup of your operating system (whatever Windows 10 or an older version of Windows like Windows 8 or Windows 7) Significantly slows down the boot time of your PC. Until all of these programs are started, your computer will be running at full capacity and you will most likely pester because of this avoidable slowness.

It is therefore one of the first actions to take to boost your PC!

How to prevent a program from launching when Windows 10 starts?

There are several methods to prevent a program from executing automatically at startup (especially with the utility MsConfig) but we will see here the simplest and fastest method!

  1. Right click on the start menu Windows 10 then select Task Manager.
Access Windows 10 Task Manager from the Start menu

  2. By default, Windows 10 task manager is minimized. Click on More details to display its full mode.Windows 10 task manager in minimized mode
  3. Go to the start tab of the task manager, you will get this way the list of programs running automatically when Windows 10 starts as well as their status (activated / deactivated).

Be careful what you do!

Certain programs must imperatively run when Windows starts (antivirus, utilities linked to your computer’s drivers, update programs, etc.). Don’t do anything and deactivate everything, use your judgment! Only block programs that are not essential to Windows and that should logically not be launched when Windows starts.
