Thermal efficiency tells us the efficiency of converting the energy in fuel into useful energy used to pull the vehicle. Put simply, the energy burned by the fuel in the combustion chamber is converted into two forms. The first is the kinetic energy to propel the car – this is a useful form of energy. The second is converted to heat generating heat, which is wasted energy.

So what makes the thermal performance of diesel engines so good? This is because the compression ratio of diesel engines is often higher than gasoline engines. Oil engines often operate with a static compression ratio of about 16: 1. With this ratio, the gas mixture between diesel and air will ignite by pressure, so no spark plugs like gasoline engines are needed. Gasoline engines usually operate with a lower compression ratio of about 11: 1 and need spark plugs to ignite the air (Mazda’s Skyactiv engine with compression ratio can be up to 14: 1 is a special case). Being able to compress air more intensely makes the oil engine have better thermal efficiency.

The difference also comes from the fuel / air ratio in the combustion chamber. Gasoline engines with this ratio range from 12: 1 to 18: 1. Under normal operating conditions, this ratio of gasoline engines is usually maintained at 14.7: 1 because this is the ratio causing gasoline and oxygen to be completely burned. Oil engines have a much wider range, from 18: 1 to 70: 1 and are capable of operating at a “very poor” rate, meaning that they use extremely little fuel. In addition, diesel fuel has a density of about 15% more dense than gasoline, which means that although it has a slightly lower energy density than gasoline (45,500 kJ / kg compared to 45,800 kJ / kg), if 1 kg is burned diesel, engines still produce more than 1 kg of gasoline.

So what about practical experience? Of course I’m not expecting an interesting driving experience or the ability to get into the “god of sadness” cornering. The Isuzu mu-X is a family car and it does its job well. The 1.9L engine block is not too powerful, but it has enough power to make the 7-seat SUV glide smoothly. If I had to point out a small minus point then I would find this engine to be noisier than the opponent. Steering wheel feeling is relatively heavy but real hand. I like the feel of the mu-X’s electric power steering, though some people will find it too heavy and prefer Everest’s electric power steering. The Isuzu mu-X 6-speed automatic gearbox does its job whether it talks about smoothness or optimum gear ratio when traveling on the highway, the 10-speed Ford Everest gearbox is still superior.
