Create blocks and add depth to images in Photoshop

Create blocks and add depth to images in Photoshop

In this tutorial we will look at how we can add weight and depth to our images in Photoshop.

Here is the original image, you can save it for practice:

The eyes are the windows to the soul and they are very important in portraits, so we’ll deal with that first.

After opening the image, create a new blank Layer (New-> Layer or Ctrl + Shift + N), with Blending Mode was Overlay.

After creating the layer you use Brush white and Opacity low (from 5 to 10%) and paint over the iris of the eyes until the brightness of the eyes is raised.

After doing the eye lightening, we will start to darken the image.

Create more Ajustment Layer: Black & White (Layer -> New Ajustment Layer -> Black & White …) or click the Ajustment Layer icon in the Layers panel and choose Black & White …

Bleding Mode: Multiply

Opacity: 50%

In the Layer of Ajustment Layer, we will make adjustments in the panel Properties (Windows -> Properties) according to the parameters below.

  • Reds: -17
  • Yellow: 169
  • Green: 184
  • Cydian: 300
  • Blue: 300
  • Magento: 220

Important: If with this adjustment we will lose the eye brightness, take it Brush Color Black and fill the eye area, inside the layer Black & White 1 just created.

Create another Cuves Ajustment layer (Layer -> New Ajustment Layer -> Cuves.) or click the Ajustment Layer icon in the Layers panel and choose Cuves.

In the Properties panel, drag the position of this curve to the following parameters: Input 154, Output: 84

Double-click the Curves layer

By double clicking on the layer, the panel Layer Style will appear.

You pay attention to the This Layer, there will be a slider to change the color from black to white, we pay attention to the white handle, press the key Alt on that pin so it splits the pin in half

We will take White Node where it says “this class” and with ALT key, We will separate these nodes.

Drag the sliders according to the parameters shown below.

What this would do is remove the Light from the white areas of the image, leaving only the dark areas.

Then we change the mode Blending: Soft Light / Opacity: 50% .

Color correction

We will create a new Ajustment Layer named Selective Color (Layer -> New Ajustment Layer -> Selective Color) or click the Ajustment Layer icon in the Layers panel and choose Selective Color.

And we can work on each Color channel separately. In the Properties panel of the Layer Selective Color, you switch Color to Green, and adjust according to the following parameters:

  • Cyan: 100
  • Magenta: -4
  • Yellow: -91
  • Black: 25

Create artificial light

Create New layersi (Ctrl + Shift + N) with Blend Mode: Overlay

In a new layer, we will paint the light one by one Brush white on the head of the model. It will create some points of nhanas.

Opacity Brush’s can vary from 20 to 40%. Note the use of brushes Soft Round to create a smoother effect on the edges.

Finishing color

Here, we will neutralize the skin tone and create a final Color area for the image.

We will go to: Windows> Channel

CTRL + Click RGB.

Once the selection is made, make adjustments Curves (News-> Ajusment Layer -> Cuves).

Step I: Bring in more light by moving the curve.

Step II: Work on each color channel separately.

Move each color (Red, Green, Blue) and adjust for better skin color. This one you see for yourself and adjust to your eyes, below are some examples.

Here are the results after the adjustment:

Next you press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E to merge all layers into a new image layer. Once done, go to Camera Raw (Filter -> Camera Raw Filter).

Camera Raw:

Here, we will work to increase the sharpness and brightness as well as detail of the image. Adjust the following parameters:

  • Hightlight: -69
  • White: 27
  • Texture: 25
  • Clarity: 28
  • Dehaze: 2

When finished, press Ok.

And we should go back to Photoshop.

Here again we will create a Layer Mask (Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal All) and press CTRL + I.

Once this layer has turned black, take a white brush and paint on the model’s face and places where you need to enhance the details we made in Camera Raw .

So complete, wish you success
