Perhaps you will remember when asked like that, that most are taking color photos, viewing color photos, sometimes taking black and white or having some black-and-white photos that make me enjoy watching. Emotions are very important in taking photos and viewing photos. Sometimes we can't explain why our eyes are so interested, it's about the nature of color. We will talk to each other about the nature of color in camera modeling, color harmony and contrast, how to think of black and white images or colors! A little dry, but I need it, you bear it.
We will discuss 4 points:
- What is the nature of color?
- What is the color of harmony & contrast?
- What is black and white photo thinking?
- What is color image thinking?
In the past, the teacher used to say: "Color in photography is a major element of shaping"The color itself is a subject, creating different feelings with different color schemes that have a strong visual impact like any action, incident, person or any bizarre thing!
Nature of colors
Colors are made up of 3 elements: Sharp (hue), Brightness (brilliance), freshness (saturation)
- Colors are words used to describe colors such as: red, blue, orange, yellow …
- Brightness is a strong or weak reflection making the color dark or light.
- Freshness is the purity of color, it will decrease when mixed with another color.
Pure color is the color of the spectrum or as the rainbow. These colors, though blending and transitioning continuously from one color to another, can be divided into two groups:
- Main group: red – yellow – green
- Sub-group: green – purple – orange
Raw colors are very rare in nature. But if they appear and are recorded, they will make a strong impression on your photo. Yellow is the brightest color in all colors, just a golden light streak on the dark neutral frame will stand out as well. It is one of the reasons that photos with a golden strip of light strikes the eyesight, making it easy to create visual emotions. Many people find this color for their photos.
When the raw color is mixed together according to different levels, it will produce neutral colors that are lighter or darker. In nature, there are many colors of this blend, and it is the subtle color of "color mixing apparatus in nature" that creates the appeal of visual beauty.
When we use a large aperture, or a telephoto lens to have a thin "clear image – DOF", a blurry background or foreground that makes colors blend together so that the effect (effect) is even more visible than softness. Soothing of the color mix, due to weather or light source.
Thus, colors work to create an emotion, a drama, an impression and change according to the subjective response of each person. So, it is said that the emotional nature of color is more important than their physical properties, but understanding the physical properties will make use of it to enhance more "color emotions".
A little red orange is enough to attract the eye first.
Color scheme of nature
Brick color is stronger than neutral colors around the image, it just plays a path to the subject, but it's so brilliant
Yellow streaks are easy to impress in a dark frame.
Harmony & Contrast
Going to take photos, we don't mix or mix colors as active as artists. But the color in nature is richer than the artist's palette. No color combination is created, but one can choose a color blending style that suits the great palette of nature. How? by shifting the angle of rotation, selecting the color array or excluding the color array as you like; By zooming with your feet going back and forth, or choosing lens focal lengths, you can even change the whitebalance to "play" colors, creating an interest in taking photos.
"Harmonization" is the array of colors next to each other in the spectral range such as: green-green-yellow or yellow-orange-red. In contrast, the "contrast" color array is symmetrical in the spectral range, like green-red-green-orange, or yellow-purple … Red and green have the same brightness, so they are almost "equal". Orange is brighter than blue, so the classic color scheme is less green orange. Gold is more brilliant than purple, so a bit of gold will be more easily matched with a large purple.
You see the picture I took. There are good patches of color hitting the eyes, and there are colored patches that distract attention from the attention.
Nature of color
This film I photographed for a long time, the time I went to set up the locations, the bottom yellow strip was due to the film's nature, so it was not so brilliant. But it is easier to attract eyes than other elements in the image.
The scene of color mixing, you try to see which color is strong visual impression?
A mass of color immediately attracted eyes (1) before crossing 2 areas on both sides, then stopped wondering what was in it.
For example, this sheet, bright yellow has a very strong visual impact compared to the surrounding color. So when you look at this picture, the first sight is the electric pole (1) and the new eye shifts through the blue of the girl's pants (2), stops there for a moment, and then looks through the other areas. So, if you call the girl who needs to focus immediately, it is the electric pole.
This plate, the reddish-orange orange color of the corrugated iron roof immediately attracts first sight (1), the color is small but has strong visual impact in the colors. After that, the eyes will shift to other details, clouds or trees or trees … If the house is not "charming" then the picture will fail. For example, it is a floating wooden house on the lake, it will be different from metal …
That said, that's the theory. A "true" picture is very difficult and "beautiful" for people in terms of color. There is no guarantee. So there is no restriction, we have full freedom according to personal preferences, including strange, unusual color combinations, choosing to put colored patches side by side as you like. There will be people who do not match "gu", there is nothing to worry about.
Black and white thinking
You know that photography has been around for nearly 200 years, for the first 100 years, for everyone, photography is just black and white! By now, the opposite is true, color photos are a matter of course. Everyone can easily see color images that are easy to "beautiful" everything when recorded into a frame, including a tragic or traumatic scene. But one important thing is "only the new black and white photo breaks through the flashy outer layer and creates a very strong sense of reality that attracts the viewer."
If shooting in black and white, the photographer must capture with a different skill than color photography. Black-and-white image thinking is about thinking of chroma, understanding the nature of the said color, and then seeing the color is the light intensity. Very difficult! For example, when looking at a scene of bright red and blue colors lying side by side, that intense contrast, reflecting the same amount of light, then through black and white, has the same gray color, very weak contrast. with real scenes.
So, sometimes taking color clearly see the difference in colors, black and white becomes meaningless. Therefore, to capture black and white, the photographer must have a lot of imagination, visualizing a black-and-white photo before shooting. If the visualization is a color image, then black and white images are important. You must see things and distinguish colors, and this comes from experience, taking lots and lots of time over time. So it is worth taking care of you to play black and white photos successfully.
Gray shades have little difference, so when shooting black and white, there is less contrast between the main subjects and the image space.
Gray shades have contrast due to the light reflecting the different arrays.
Every day, on social networks, television, street advertising, the packaging bags we use … have colors flooding our eyes! We see everything every day by color, not by black and white. So we feel familiar with the color world. The reaction of countless people holding the camera is to expect it to record color images with the eyes seen every day. How the hell did it get that no matter how technology developed. There are two things to discuss:
- Firstly, colors are perceived by feeling so the perception of colors is always subjective. Colors represent somewhat reproducing reality – the important thing of photography – but the language of colors easily dominates other features of the image, content and picture information as well. An appealing color photo captures attention and it effectively conveys the information contained therein. That's the visual power of color. So, sometimes the color itself is the temptation to tempt people to replace the color in the image for the color of real life.
- Secondly, the device recognizes the image and if it prints, the printing material has a lot of impact on the color. Our eyes used to look a lot and it saved in the memory of the color of real life. The white shirt is always white as if we were impressed, even under the yellow light or white shirt, it was blue or yellow. The camera has no memory, cannot adapt itself like we do. The difference sometimes makes it difficult to see a color photo!
The more we try to reproduce the reality as much as possible when photographing color, the more frustrated we are. While, in fact, many photos "play with colors" or "play with colors" (something that color blends) makes it easy to accept, even welcome fun like photos. Did I have to remove that natural color memory then? We have used reason, intuition and vibe to evaluate the "color" image. Those kinds of color images, it led us to another light, another eye to see another world of light, abstraction and surrealism!
The left plate is "play color", the right is the color that the camera tries to recognize the reality that morning!
Therefore, we will have to look at colors as a visual experience. Color photos are a great way to express emotional truth. As long as we require image colors to be objective truths like the obvious fact, photos or videos, television or movie theater are the most cunning scams in our visual world.
