The accident happened on the same day in Gondar, a historic city in northern Ethiopia, where millions of people flock to Timkat every year. Hundreds of people sat on wooden benches before it collapsed. Witnesses say many have been crushed by the rubble and the number of deaths may continue to rise.
The Ethiopian government has confirmed that 3 people were killed and hundreds injured in the incident. Among the victims, at least 1 foreigner. Meanwhile, medical sources claim many people were injured due to fractures and internal bleeding. Ambulances struggled through the crowd to take the victims to the hospital.
After the scene was cleared, the festival continued until noon on the same day.
