Absence of menstruation at puberty

The delay of a teenager’s first menstruation can be a symptom of a delay in the onset of puberty. In general, this phase of life begins between the ages of 10 and 13. On average, the girl’s first menstruation – called menarche – occurs at age 13. If the young woman does not have menstrual bleeding up to 16 years, it is necessary to consult a gynecologist to determine the cause of the delay. Before that, however, there is no cause for concern.

Delayed menstruation due to pregnancy and lactation

To validate this hypothesis and rule out other causes for the problem, it is advisable to perform a pregnancy test. In another situation related to motherhood, the woman may have her menstrual cycle interrupted due to breastfeeding, which is also able to stop ovulation for a few months.

Post-contraceptive amenorrhea

Stopping taking the birth control pill after years of use can cause delayed menstruation, which can take a few months until ovulation is restored and regularized. The use of a hormonal contraceptive that reproduces the hormonal state of pregnancy is also responsible for amenorrhea or a significant decrease in bleeding.

Psychological causes of delayed menstruation

A framework of important stress, promoted by a sudden change in the way of life or the loss of a close relative, for example, can cause delay or even the complete interruption of menstruation for a few months.

Dietary causes of delayed menstruation

THE brutal weight loss caused by pathologies such as anorexia and bulimia, unbalanced diets and also obesity are some of the dietary causes that can promote the interruption of menstruation.

Alternative causes of delayed menstruation
