Hello, this is Lulu. The moment I saw it, Ms. Yoko Muta’s vessel was shaken intensely from the bottom. Colored porcelain with its unique aesthetic is produced so as to drift between the thoughts of the East and the West, the art and the Japanese art, and the art and the craft.
《Two-sided treasure beach turtle》
Mr. Muta said that he studied Kutani ware at the Ishikawa Prefectural Kutani Ware Technical Training Institute after graduating from the Fine Art Department of Goldsmith College, University of London and working as a contemporary art writer. I asked about the source of the work.
*What made you interested in Kutani ware?
When I was in Britain, when I was looking around antique pottery in England, the Kutani ware Kyusu that I received as a souvenir is, so to speak, an “encounter”. I was interested in the blue, green, and yellow beadro-like textures and bold floral patterns that were a bit like the shades of British ceramic tiles.
Kutani ware cannot be represented by a single easy-to-understand symbol because it developed while accepting various techniques in the times and freely changing the way it should be. So until now I had only an ambiguous image. However, including such places, Kutani ware is a little mysterious and exciting pottery full of possibilities.
Unlike the painting, porcelain is said to be close to the viewer. You can actually touch it or put it in your mouth to taste it. It feels the flowing energy. This experience is very important.
《Sanshui Scenic Waterfall》 Inspired by Hokusai’s “Kisoji no Oku Amidagataki”, the liquor is made so that the poured sake overflows from the central waterfall.
A small dragon like a strange black lizard is on a half-collapsed pillow. A luscious anxiety between sleep and dreams.
*What are the thoughts in the process of shaping what is in your head?
In my case, if there are 10 things in my head, then only 1 or 2 things are actually shaped. Perhaps all creators have a sickness that their hands can’t keep up with their brains.
Now I am happy to be able to come across a material called porcelain. There are many things that do not go as expected with difficult materials, but I do not know that something is born from it and the feeling of getting used to it as if checking it little by little is still fresh and boring.
“Ghost” The soul of a bug. Or a fine supernatural shell in the shape of an insect.
*Why “spirit beast” and “god beast”
The sacred beast, which is incorporated into architecture at shrines and temples and is also a motif drawn in fantasy in modern times, is a classic painting of ceramics. Its complex transformation of existence, which was a symbol of nature and the unknown in ancient times, also overlaps with the change in consciousness of nature in Asia. And earthenware is a material that has played a wide range of roles and has been involved in people’s lives and beliefs. In other words, the combination of vessel and beast is an interesting combination of old and present for me.
<< Spring thunder beast map >> The beast that fell with the spring thunder is clinging to the cherry tree.
When I saw Mr. Muta’s work, I felt the world of skewering multiple dimensions. Conversations with the spirit beasts who live in each of the overlapping dimensions, such as Millefeuille, are held on the vessel.
《Blue Kirin》 Kirin standing in the ghost mountain, quietly visiting so as not to step on the flowers.
I can feel the love for life. For Kirin, who keeps himself from stepping on flowers, and for people like rice grains who enjoy the scenery among the pine trees.
《Shanshui landscape pine》 The shape of the vessel was likened to a near view and a distant view, and the scenery of the landscape painting was applied.
“Birth” A daze in a dream. Many unusual iconography mixed with turbidity that flies between life and death. The ball carried by the three-headed Kalavi in the center is a symbol of life.
First, it is said that the method of shaping the outline with ink is called “bone drawing”. One Kutani teacher said, “Draw a tiger with a tiger feeling, a bamboo with a bamboo feeling, and a cloud with a cloud feeling.”
By reflecting the image that the painter wants to have in the motif in each line, the overall impression and tension are created. Lines are the bones and veins that support the world of painting.
The path of energy and energy that resides in both the land and the human body. It is what shapes life, what makes up the world. We and others are all elementary particles (energy) if we make them finer.
<< Clear Vortex Dragon God Figure >> Two dragons meet at the bottom of the water. At the edge of the plate, the carp gradually becomes a dragon.
*What are they talking about? And what kind of sense of unity (the reaction of the beast when it becomes flat, something like a change) is created when it dwells in the vessel.
When I draw spirit beasts and other beasts and creatures, the most careful thing is the eyes. I try not to express emotions that are easily understood and deformed. Classic dragons are often depicted with a terrifying glaring expression as an object of awe, but in my case I see them as round and slightly inorganic eyes like fish and reptiles.
Whether it’s nature or other animals, there are few things that humans can grasp, and I think that many of them are drawn closer to me with my imagination. Those impressions and illusions overlap in the culture and are drawn in the vessel through me.
<< A ghost >> A monkey-shaped spirit that lives in the forest, or a monkey-shaped forest ghost.
The shape of the limbs is fresh. I’m going to speak human language.
There are few things that people can grasp. The power to see what you cannot see = imagination. When you can imagine the world you imagined, it will “certainly exist” for you.
The ideal is an ambivalent balance that depicts the scene, creatures, wind, and waves of “movement” with the “quiet” line.
<< Blue glaze lion peony figure >> The first bowl I made with the desire to incorporate the blue of Kutani into my own work.
<< Black and white elephant paradise >> The elephants decorated with flowers are in a world of eternal peace. A vessel that envisions a peaceful heavenly world.
I remembered the elephant who was born and met at Wat Sam Phran. (Article “Wat Samphran / Bangkok Travelogue ③”)
*What is “beauty” for Mr. Muta?
“Beauty” in the collection of works “Beauty Vessel” does not mean the beauty and ugliness of the general description. It is close to the idea of ”good things” that people hold. In general, unpleasant and horrifying things can be “beauty” depending on the person.
You may also find “beauty” in spirits and theories that are separate from the description and physical things. “Beauty” dwells in faith and life.
However, of course, many people are not aware of “beauty” for themselves. As a writer, I am influenced by the world every day, and while searching for my own questions, I present one or several “beauty” in my work.
《Kairyu》 A dragon that runs and swims vigorously on the surface of the sea
What attracts me is the shape that Mr. Muta describes as “my own shape.” The image of hand-kneading is that it has a simple taste, but Mr. Muta’s hand-kneading is vibrating. A form where you can feel the dynamism of life and the joy that exists here.
《Ebisu》 A jar in which the shape of the base material, the expression of the glaze, and the entanglement of the overpainting are exquisitely entwined.
The primitive joy of touching clay, like playing with mud, oozes into the baked goods. Instead of innocent soil, we seek a shape with a strong habit of repeating imitation and exaggeration of natural objects such as rocks and trees.
《Ebisu Tetsu Navy》 Jumping humpback whale
A mysterious golden whale that is farther away from this world than “Kin Ebisu”.
Distortion is beautiful. There is a charm that cannot be felt from something that fits well. A characteristic that only that person has. Perhaps it can be replaced by the words weaknesses or weaknesses. Out-of-specification beauty.
“Ebisu Wanbiraki” I drew waves as if pouring the sea. The outside and inside of the vessel were connected, and the body and the picture were integrated. The swell and splash that continue to be there.
“Dyed jungle lizard map” that combines the primitive landscape, tropical fruits and colorful insects in a dyed pattern. Rainforests and water monitors with ferns and basho.
A comfortable feeling of discomfort when arranging things from different times, cultures and lands. Mr. Muta’s “Cabinet of Curiosities”.
《Mt. Penglai》 A quote from the design of “Mt. Penglai lacquer box” at Horyuji Temple. Senkyo on a giant turtle.
At the behest of Qin Shi Huang, Xu Fu set out to the east in search of an immortal herbal medicine, and aimed at Mt. Mikami. One of them is Mt. Horai. And I remember “Taketori Monogatari”, “There is a mountain called Horai in the eastern sea.”
When I was a kid, I read Princess Kaguya and thought, “The inside of the moon is hollow.” I still believe in it.
*What is “nature” for Mr. Muta?
What is “nature” for me? That’s a big question, but I try to treat it as “a little separated” in the production.
What I am drawing is not nature itself, but the afterimage of “great nature” and something that is missing from it.
<< Mizukei Shirasawa >> Shirasawa is a sacred beast who knows everything and is considered to be a sickness ward. The front has a powerful expression, and the back is quietly snuggling up to the old tree.
A back view that feels melancholy.
I am very happy to meet Shirasawa. (Article “New Hokusai Exhibition HOKUSAI UPDATED” -The last Tokyo release of the Nagata collection “)
<< The messenger of the dragon palace >> A strange fish that smokes in the deep sea. Beautiful and scary.
It’s a mysterious creature with a sense of language, ecology, and its graceful appearance. Myths and legends are not just stories, they feel like they are studded with forgotten truths and important elements. A messenger of the Ryugu that acts as a bridge between them and reality. want to meet.
Mr. Muta’s vessel is a microcosm of “déjà vu and discomfort” that floats freely in multiple dimensions. Please try to get drunk in this aesthetic world.
