In 2014, the Government issued Decree 79, which stipulates that cars with 4 seats or more must be equipped with fire extinguishers. In 2015, the Ministry of Public Security issued Circular 57 guiding the norms of equipment of fire prevention and fighting means for road motor vehicles. Accordingly, cars from 4 to 9 seats must be equipped with a fire extinguisher of less than 4 kg or less than 5 liters. If violating the regulations, the car owner will be fined from 300,000 to 500,000 VND.

This regulation has caused many conflicting opinions. Many vehicle owners worry about the quality of a fire extinguisher and the risk of a fire extinguisher exploding if stored in a vehicle during hot weather.

After 4 years of implementation, regulations on 4 – 9 seat cars having to install a fire extinguisher have officially been abolished since January 10, 2021. Specifically, in 2020, the Government promulgates Decree 136, in which it is not mandatory for cars with 4-9 seats to be equipped with fire extinguishers as prescribed in Decree 79/2014.

Powder Fire Extinguisher

A dry powder fire extinguisher (MFZ system) is a dry powder fire extinguisher. This powder works on the principle of diluting the concentration of oxygen. Accordingly, the powder will react with the heat to generate CO2 Insufficient oxygen will cause the fire to turn off on its own.

  • Non-toxic, not polluting the environment
  • No danger if contact with human body
  • Light weight, high flexibility
  • Cheap

Defect:

  • Burning powder can put out a fire on electronic devices, but the residue left behind will cause serious damage to the device
  • After extinguishing the fire, the residue left behind is difficult to clean
  • The fire is likely to recur if it is not completely turned off

Fire extinguisher CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

Fire extinguisher of CO2 (MT system) is a type of gas extinguisher using CO2 compressed liquid in a high-pressure vessel. This bottle works on the principle of asphyxiation. CO2 will dilute the oxygen and cause the fire to turn off on its own.

Defect:

  • Heavy weight
  • May cause cold burns if sprayed into human body
  • Do not use with enclosed space, no safe way out

Fire extinguisher foam

A foam fire extinguisher is a type of bottle that uses a foam fire extinguishing agent. This type of vessel operates according to the principle of isolation. Fire fighting foam will form a coating over the combustible to isolate oxygen from the combustible.

Depending on the type of vehicle, the buyer chooses the appropriate size and weight of the fire extinguisher. As a rule, vehicle owners are equipped with fire extinguishers with the weight or capacity of the vehicle as follows:

  • Cars with 4 – 9 seats: 1 bottle under 4 kg or less than 5 liters.
  • Cars from 10 to 15 seats: 1 bottle from 4 kg – 6 kg or from 5 liters – 9 liters.
  • Cars with 16-30 seats: 1 bottle under 4 kg or less than 5 liters, and 1 bottle from 4 kg – 6 kg or from 5 liters – 9 liters.
  • Cars with over 30 seats: 1 bottle under 4 kg or less than 5 liters, and 2 bottles of 4 kg – 6 kg or from 5 liters – 9 liters.

Note storing the fire extinguisher on the car safely

Most of the mini fire extinguishers for cars are usually only able to withstand temperatures below 55 degrees C. While in our country in the summer, the temperature rises quite high. If a car is parked at noon when the outdoor temperature is more than 40 degrees Celsius, the temperature in the car can rise to 58-60 degrees C. Areas that easily absorb heat such as tapro, steering wheel, steering glass … Can increase from 70 to 80 degrees Celsius.

Elevated temperatures will cause the fire extinguisher’s pressure to increase. If the pressure exceeds the threshold, it is very dangerous to cause fire and explosion. Therefore, when storing a fire extinguisher in a vehicle, the following should be taken into account:

Do not place fire extinguishers in high temperature areas

When the ambient temperature is high, exceeding the limit for the extinguisher will cause the volume of extinguishant in the tank to increase. Therefore, to be safe, it is not recommended to leave a fire extinguisher in a car in places exposed to direct sunlight such as a taplo, a storage tray / drawer in the front seat area.

Place fire extinguishers within reach of the driver

To get the fastest treatment if a fire occurs, put the fire extinguisher in the reach of the driver. According to Volvo’s advice, the fire extinguisher position in a car should be underneath the driver’s seat or in the footrest of the passenger seat (side passenger seat). The fire extinguisher should not be placed in the footrest of the driver’s seat because it will cause entanglement when the driver controls the accelerator / brake / clutch pedal …

Limit movement of fire extinguishers

During storage, limit the movement of the fire extinguisher. If so, you should move gently to avoid strong impact because it can cause the pressure in the tank to increase, causing fire and explosion.

How to use a car fire extinguisher

Instructions for use of car mini fire extinguishers:

  1. Shake the flask gently to allow the burning substance to mix well
  2. Remove the protective cap / lock on the mouth
  3. Between vertical pitchers
  4. Press the spray button on the fire until the fire is extinguished
Remove the protective cap / lock on the mouth of the extinguisher before spraying

Notes when using a car fire extinguisher:

  • Standing at the top of the wind direction will help the fire be extinguished faster.
  • When spraying, the extinguisher should be at least 1 m away from the fire to ensure safety.
  • For gasoline combustibles, do not spray in one place but surround them so that the extinguishant covers the whole combustible.
  • Immediately after buying a car fire extinguisher, the owner should try a little spray first to both check the tank and understand how to use it.
  • Pay attention to the shelf life and condition of the extinguisher. For powder fire extinguishers the shelf life is usually 5 years. With the form of CO2, depending on the amount of gas remaining in the tank, it can be checked by weighing the weight of the tank.
