Asus Fonepad 8 review – VnReview

Launched at the end of October, Asus Fonepad 8 (FE380CG) is the latest version of the tablet line with the function of calling and texting launched at the end of the year to contribute to increase the choice from Asus. Also so that VnReview received a lot of requests from readers to evaluate this tablet for them to have more information before deciding to buy a tablet computer.

Fonepad 8 is priced at 4.99 million dong, belongs to the low-end mid-range tablet segment, but is equipped with many remarkable features such as dual front speakers, support for two SIM calls, configuration and performance. quite good with slim design, thin screen border.

Design

ASUS Fonepad 8 (FE380CG) has a modern, sophisticated design. Thanks to a short width of only about 12 cm, the screen border is 5.06 mm thin, so this tablet model looks pretty "lightheaded", easy to hold with one hand. Thick body 8.9 mm and weight 310g at a moderate level, making it easy for users to carry around.

The obvious difference in design compared to the previous generation is in the speaker slot below the Asus logo on the front. Two front speakers form pairs of stereo speakers like BoomSound speakers on HTC phones. Because the speaker is lower than the front, it seems easy to get dirty and difficult to clean during use.

The front of the machine has an 8-inch screen, the sides are thin. According to Asus, the screen occupies 72% of FonePad 8's front area, higher than the average of about 60% in its segment. However, due to the thin edges of the two sides, the thick upper and lower edges create a slightly long, unbalanced feel.

The back of the machine made of plastic is stamped with many small holes, smooth and without fingerprints. Small dots on the back of the device remind the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 or Samsung Galaxy S5. The camera is set to a left angle, with no flash support.

Surrounding the screen border and the edge of the machine is a small yellow metal frame, the back cover is not removable. Because the edge is beveled, making the machine thinner, the buttons are inserted into the chamfer, so it is difficult to press, especially when using one hand.

The left side has a regular Sim slot and a microSD memory card with a protective cover.

Fonepad 8 supports call and 3G connection, there are 2 standard MicroSIM SIM slots on the body. Next to the top of the phone is a headphone jack, microUSB charging port.

Screen

Compared to the launch of Fonepad 7 last year, the screen resolution of Fonepad 8 remains 1280 x 800 pixels, the pixel density of 189 ppi. Due to such a modest resolution, the displayed image is not sharp, but this is also a common problem for cheap tablets.

During the actual use, I found that the display quality of the screen was not so bad, meeting the normal use needs. Machine has a wide viewing angle, less color changes, somewhat better than Fonepad 7. The ability to reproduce colors is also good so the screen feels real, easy to see. Besides being advertised as a fingerprint-resistant screen, I found that the screen of the ASUS Fonepad 8 was also stuck with fingerprints, quickly dirty if not cleaned regularly.

When using dedicated devices to measure the display quality of the screen, the ASUS Fonepad 8 has a maximum brightness of medium (335 nit), but the ability to display black is quite good, so it has good contrast at 1654: 1. With the basic colors, the machine is very real and the screen does not tend to haunt green like many other low-cost tablets.

The ability to display basic colors: Below are standard colors and above is the color shown on the screen.

Gray scale display: the bottom is standard non-standard colors and above is the color shown on the screen

Asus Fonepad color space table 8. The squares are standard color points, while the circular dots are the actual color. Can see the color space of Asus Fonepad 8 is still limited.

Operating system and features

Asus Zenfone 8 uses the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system with intuitive ZenUI interface. The swipe from the top to the left will open the notification bar, and if you swipe on the right side, a handy quick setting bar will appear.

The device has a lot of built-in features of Asus such as: What's Next has the same function as a book to organize, manage and alert jobs; ZenLink is a collection of communication methods of sharing this tablet's data with other devices conveniently; Open Cloud to link to One Drive cloud sharing services, Google Drive; Power Saver helps save energy, cMiracast technology allows content to be transferred quickly

Built-in application

Power Saver battery saving feature

Besides, one outstanding feature is that it supports 2 SIM slots, can use one SIM call and one 3G SIM.

Performance

Fonepad 8 equipped with the new Intel Core Z3530 four-core chip, 64-bit technology at 1.33 GHz, PowerVR G6430 image processor (GPU). Using reality with basic tasks such as surfing the web, switching screens, calling, texting, phonebook, watching videos, the device proved quite smooth, but also not superior to the old generation. The difference shows when the device turns on heavy applications or games, Fonepad now offers a faster download time.

When using the Fonepad 8 performance evaluation app, the score is quite high. Specifically, the machine achieved 12167 points with Quadrant and 26859 points in AnTuTu. However, because only 1GB of RAM is available, the in-game transitions such as Asphalt 8 or Dead Trigger 2 sometimes appear to lag slightly.

One of the features that make it cheap is that it has a modest internal memory of 8GB, of which more than 4GB is available for users, so it is very lacking in storing or installing many applications. However, the device supports microSD memory card up to 64GB so users are also more secure.

Camera

Like its predecessor, Asus Fonepad 8 is equipped with two cameras with 2.0 MP front-facing camera and 5.0 MP rear camera. Both cameras are supported with PixelMaster imaging technology and various creative shooting modes But the quality of photography is only average, meeting basic needs for sharing on social networks or video conversations. The camera of the device is also not equipped with Flash to cut costs.

Here are some photos taken from the main camera of the device, when clicking on the image to view the original image, we can see that the image is quite heavy and noisy.

Indoor photos taken with the front camera

The quality of movie shooting on the device is similar to the quality of shooting, nothing outstanding. It can record Full HD movies at 30 frames per second. Images with noise phenomenon, the ability to record in low light conditions is not good.

Sound

Fonepad 8 is equipped with dual speaker system in front, stereo sound and SonicMaster technology to help sound directly to users to enjoy songs, movies or games. Through practical experience, the device's external speakers sound clear, separated when listening near but small volume so people sitting away from about 2, 3 meters will not hear clearly.

In terms of conversation, the speaker of the machine responds quite well. I tested some SIM conversations with three Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone networks, all of which found that the sound quality of the call and the sound recording were all good. However, in the process of testing the duration of the call battery, many times the device has been interrupted for 20 minutes without knowing the cause.

Users should also bring a headset to connect in case of using the phone to make conversation, instead of holding an 8-inch tablet to apply directly to the ear.

The battery

It is equipped with 15.2Wh Li-polymer battery and Intel Atom Z3530 chip with energy saving technology, so it can be used continuously for about 10 hours with basic tasks like web surfing, social network access, sometimes watching movies, calling, playing light games

In our test, the battery life of Fonepad 8 was 12 hours 23 minutes from full charge to 10%, the playing time was 2 hours 57 minutes, the movie viewing time was 4 hours 28 minutes and browsing time is 6 hours 13 minutes. Overall, this result is pretty good for a mid-range tablet.

Conclude

Asus Fonepad 8 FE380CG is an 8-inch tablet with a compact, modern and sophisticated design. The device has good performance, is equipped with two SIM and especially good entertainment support thanks to the bright screen, dual speakers for good sound quality.

Fonepad 8 has many versions with youthful colors and quite soft price. For young customers who want a versatile, good entertainment device and can hear calls when needed, this is a good choice at the end of the year.
