Lenovo ThinkBook 15p: Design

The ThinkBook 15p is not classified as a mobile workstation because it is equipped with an Nvidia GeForce graphics card instead of the Quadro line of cards. Compared to its workstation laptop version, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, the design of the 15p has not yet reached the MIL-STD military standard.

With a 3-way length of 14.1 x 9.8 x 0.78 inches, the ThinkBook 15p is about the same size as the Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED (14 x 9.8 x 0.78 inches), but slightly lighter with an overall weight of 1.9 kg. . The Dell XPS 15 has a slightly more compact design, with a length of 3 sides of 13.6 x 9.1 x 0.71 inches and a weight of 1.81 kg.

The outer shell of the ThinkBook 15p is made entirely from aluminum, finished with 2 distinct gray tones with the Lenovo and ThinkBook logos placed above. The device is equipped with a screen with a diagonal size of 15.6 inches, wrapped inside by a moderately sized bezel. Specifically, the two sides of the screen are quite thin, while the top and bottom edges are made a bit thicker.

The top edge of the device is equipped with a standard 720p webcam, which is supported by a physical lens closure for increased security. Unfortunately, you cannot use this webcam for face unlock. However, you can still use your fingerprint to log into the system easily.

The machine is fully equipped with all kinds of connection ports, helping you work effectively with many different types of peripherals. Along the left edge of the machine is equipped with an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a USB 3.2 Type-A and Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an AC power port. Meanwhile, on the right side, there is an additional USB Type-A port, an SD card reader slot and an anti-theft lock slot.

Lenovo ThinkBook 15p: Screen

The version of the device that we used in the review is equipped with a screen with a theoretical maximum brightness level of up to 600 nit. With this screen, you can clearly see all displayed content even when using the device outdoors.

Colors displayed on the panel are vibrant and vivid. According to the manufacturer, the screen is capable of covering 100% of the Adobe RGB color range. And with the high resolution of 4K, everything is displayed in sharp and detailed manner.

During actual use, the ThinkBook 15p’s screen gave us a very good picture quality. All content is displayed in a sharp and vivid way, providing a good experience when working as well as when watching movies.

Lenovo ThinkBook 15p: Keyboard and touchpad

Although equipped with a screen of equal quality to high-end ThinkPad models, the 15p’s keyboard set is of slightly lower quality.

On the strong side, the buttons are brightly lit through the lighting system below, and the number pad cluster on the side brings many conveniences during work. The keyboard has good sensitivity, but the button travel is not very deep.

In terms of minus points, the keyboard has a slightly narrow layout, which took us a bit of time to get used to. Meanwhile, the arrow key cluster of the device is a bit small in size, with the upper and lower 2 buttons being cut to half the size compared to the standard level.

The touchpad of the device has a standard surface area, which is placed slightly to the left of the body. The surface of the touchpad is smooth, allowing me to easily control the mouse pointer to interact with different applications on the screen.

Lenovo ThinkBook 15p: Performance

The version of the machine that we use in the article is equipped with an Intel Core i7-10750H chip with fast performance. In this review, we will compare the performance of the machine with other models in the same segment, including the MSI Prestige 15, Dell XPS 15 and Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED.

Scoring overall processing performance with the PCMark 10 test, Lenovo’s laptop scored 5103. This is a pretty good result, slightly higher than the average of the office laptop segment. For comparison, competing models of the 15p also achieved similar scores, namely the Dell XPS 15 (4864 points), Gigabyte Aero 15 (5154 points) and MSI Prestige 15 (5220 points).

On the video transcoding test with the HandBrake application, the ThinkBook 15p completed the conversion of a 12 minute 4K video to 1080p resolution in 10 minutes and 5 seconds. The machine has a similar test time to the MSI Prestige 15, but slower than the Dell XPS 15 (9 minutes 27 seconds) and Gigabyte Aero 15 (8 minutes 1 second).

In terms of graphics, our version is equipped with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti (Max-Q) series of cards with 4GB of VRAM. To determine the level of graphics processing performance for the models, we use 2 tests Sky Diver and Fire Strike of 3DMark.

Lenovo ThinkBook 15p scored 21244 and 8874 respectively in 2 tests. Because they are equipped with the same GPU, the Dell XPS 15 and MSI Prestige 15 have similar scores compared to Lenovo’s laptops. Equipped with the RTX 30 series cards, Gigabyte is the best performing laptop in the test, with scores of 39681 and 19591 respectively.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 15p has a good battery life, allowing us to use the machine for a long time. To test the battery life level, we let the device loop through a 720p video with 50% screen brightness and 100% volume level until the device powered off.

The ThinkBook 15p lasted 11 hours and 7 minutes on this test. This battery life result is longer when compared to the Gigabyte Aero 15 (8 hours 45 minutes) and the MSI Prestige 15 (9 hours 40 minutes), but slightly worse than the Dell XPS 15 (12 hours 19 minutes).

Lenovo ThinkBook 15p: Heat dissipation

Lenovo ThinkBook 15p possesses effective heat dissipation, allowing you to use the machine for a long time without having to worry about thermal overload.

To test the heat dissipation performance of the machine, we let the laptop run a 1080p video for 15 minutes. After this period of time, the hottest area of the laptop was located in the chassis, with a recorded temperature of 34 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, in the center of the keyboard and touchpad, there was a heat level. more stable, namely 31 and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
