America6-year-old Madalyn in New Jersey woke up to the sound of a smoke alarm and woke the whole family out of the burning house.
The fire occurred at 2 o’clock on January 19 at a family of four in Avenel, Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA. Madalyn Karlbon woke up to the sound of a smoke alarm, but her parents and two-year-old brother were still asleep. Madalyn immediately ran to wake them up.
“I remember my daughter screaming ‘daddy’s house is on fire, that house is on fire,” said Jimmy Karlbon, Madalyn’s father. “I did not hear the alarm from the smoke detector, did not hear any sound. All I heard was ‘the house is on fire’.”

Jimmy woke up to his daughter’s call and saw that the second floor of the house was in smoke. “I don’t even see where Madalyn is. I grabbed Hunter and saw Madalyn on the stairs. I picked up Madalyn and put the kids on the front porch. I said ‘come here, where’s my mom?’, ‘ I was on the couch, “Jimmy recalls.
Firefighters said Jimmy Karlbon and his wife and two children both escaped from the house safely, but all the furniture was broken and the house could not stay. Cory Spillar, a member of the local fire department, said that Madalyn recently taught fire safety at school.
In a Facebook post, the fire department Avenel praised Madalyn as a “hero” for taking quick action to save his family. “Needless to say how smart she is. The incident this morning proved! I recognized the danger immediately and helped everyone escape from the house before the fire got worse.”
