Mercedes-Benz has finally introduced a new C-Class that has undergone a full change. This 6th generation C class is a new model that appeared 7 years after the 5th generation, which was unveiled in 2014.
Benz explained that the new C-Class will provide an all-new comfort, and at the same time introduced two key keywords that are at the heart of the new C-Class. It is’digitalization’ and’efficiency’.
First of all, if we look at the powertrain of the C class, Mercedes will provide a single four-cylinder engine for the new class C. The gasoline/diesel four-cylinder engine is combined with a starter generator (ISG), which provides features such as gliding, boosting, and regenerative braking through a 48-volt on-board electrical system, boasting excellent power transmission and efficiency.
In particular, Mercedes said that the new C-Class is the first model to combine a diesel engine with an ISG, and a version with a fourth-generation plug-in hybrid system will soon be released.
This model is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 25.4 kWh consisting of 96 cells and is expected to deliver a range of 100 km. In addition, the electric motor mounted together exhibits a torque of up to 44.8kg.m and can use the maximum power up to 140km/h. A discharged battery is fully charged in 30 minutes via a 55kW DC charger.
The electrical energy of the battery can be recovered during the vehicle’s deceleration or downhill driving, and the interaction with the hydraulic brakes is further improved. Benz said this would result in an energy recovery output of more than 100 kW, and said that an intelligent route-based system activates the most suitable electric driving mode for the route.
In addition, in all driving modes except the Spot Plus mode, the driver can feel the’one pedal’ feel like a pure electric car, and when the driver releases his foot from the accelerator, the vehicle is decelerated by electrical means without brakes.
The new C-Class has a new 4-link axle on the front wheel and a multi-link axle on the rear. This will provide a higher level of comfort and agile handling, and will show more quiet driving.
In particular, this model has newly added rear wheel steering, which is the same as the new S-Class. As for the optional rear wheel steering, the rear wheel steers in the opposite direction to the front wheel at a speed of less than 60 km/h, and up to 2.5 degrees in the opposite direction when parking.
In addition, the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, which actively adjusts the distance of the vehicle, can respond to a stopped vehicle even at a speed of 100 km/h, unlike the previous model, and Active Steering Assist It helps you stay in your lane at speeds of up to 210 km/h.
Along with advanced driving technology, the new C-Class introduces more advanced light technology. This model is equipped with LED high-performance headlights as standard, and buyers can optionally apply a DIGITAL LIGHT system that can project guides or warning signs on the road ahead.
This system, which was also applied to the new S-Class, consists of a lighting module equipped with three powerful LEDs, and the light from the LED is refracted by 1.3 million micro-mirrors and projected onto the road.
In addition, this system has a built-in feature called digital intelligence. The technology detects pedestrians through an on-board camera and sensor system and reviews data and digital navigation maps in milliseconds to optimally adjust the light distribution to each situation. As a result, Class C lights minimize glare for pedestrians and other drivers and provide drivers with optimal visibility.
The new C-Class has a long wheelbase and rear overhang and a relatively short overhang that gives it a dynamic feel. The headlights, which are thinner compared to the previous generation, are realizing one of the six themes of Mercedes design,’dramatic contrast’ and creating a sharper impression than before.
The grille features a central triangular logo and a single louver, and on the avant-garde models, the louvers are additionally decorated and chrome garnishes are applied to the grille edges. The top trim, the AMG line, features a diamond grill with a chrome triangle logo top jack.
The side features a concise side structure like the new S-Class. A new character line called the’catwalk line’ is applied at the bottom of the belt line, and the waist line, which is connected diagonally to the rear, adds to the vehicle’s dynamism.
The tail light at the rear, which naturally connects with the catwalk line, has an inverted triangle sharp shape, and the chrome garnish of the existing tailgate has disappeared. Benz has reduced the decorative elements to the maximum and changed the sense of the line more concisely, further dramatically revealing the sensual purity of their design philosophy.
The interior has been renewed as well as the exterior. First of all, the dashboard was divided into an upper area and a lower area, and vents reminiscent of the aircraft’s engine were placed in the upper part. Ambient light is applied in the center, and the dashboard and central display are tilted 6 degrees towards the driver.
The independently located cluster consists of a high-resolution LCD screen, and buyers can choose between the 10.25-inch (26.0 cm) or 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) versions. In addition, the central display is arranged vertically for smoother operation and boasts a size of 24.1cm or 30.2cm depending on the diagonal standard option.
The display supports three styles (Discreet, Sporty, Classic) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service), allowing the driver to personalize the display design. In addition, the seat headrests have been completely redesigned.
In addition, advanced technologies such as biometric login, second-generation MBUX including smart home function, the latest driving assistance system and AR navigation were applied to the interior, thereby realizing a personalized comfort zone.
So far, we have looked at the new C-Class of Mercedes. As full change was made in 7 years, bolder design and advanced technology were added. I hope to see the new C class that will be released in Korea at the end of this year, and I will conclude today. Thank you.
