Nine years ago, the Tesla Model S was launched in the United States. I have been talking about electric cars as a transitional product for a long time since then. This is because they thought that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were the ultimate goal for eco-friendly vehicles to arrive.
There are many reasons. The biggest problem is the environmental problem caused by thermal power generation, which accounts for the largest proportion of power generation methods. I also thought people couldn’t bear the battery charging time. Besides, electric cars were terribly unattractive.
I have a lot of different thoughts now. The Tesla Model 3 performance I experienced last year was amazingly thrilling. Interest and technology in eco-friendly development have also increased. People in Tesla lined up in front of the supercharger enjoyed a leisurely movie.
And a month ago, Tesla completed the SEXY lineup by releasing Model Y in Korea. Model Y is standing in front of me now.
It resembles Model 3 so much that it’s hard to tell it apart if you don’t watch it. In fact, it shares a lot of parts with the Model 3. The production facility was also used and the prototype was released relatively quickly.
The size is 4,751×1,921×1,624mm in length x width x height. It is 57mm longer, 72mm wider and 181mm taller than Model 3. Nevertheless, the proportions are quite similar to Model 3. This is thanks to the black plastic backing from the front bumper to the wheel flats, side skirts, and the bottom of the rear bumper. If you look closely, you will find that the rear fender is thicker than the Model 3. Window frames and door handles coated in black matte instead of chrome are also different.
As I entered the room, it became more difficult to find the difference. However, the only difference is that the center tunnel is more luxurious because it is a refresh version. Wireless charging can charge two smartphones at the same time.
The interior space is as wide as it looks full. With a fully elevated position, the front view is cool. In the second row, there is room for the head even if an adult male 188cm tall sits. The seats can be laid down step by step, and there is plenty of space for your feet under the first row of seats.
The storage space is amazing. Even without folding the second row seats, space is left for the Limowa Trunk Plus (105L), trunk (90L), and check-in L (86L) bags. Here, you can put one more Limo and a cabin size (35L) bag in the hidden space under the trunk and in the front + trunk.
When the second row seats are folded, there is enough space for an adult male to lie down. The capacity is 1,926L. If you set the camping mode in the air conditioning function, it will be possible to have a comfortable car in both summer and winter.
Lower the columnar gear, set it to D, and move the car. It is still quiet. However, when it exceeds 80km/h, the road noise starts to become annoying. Even with the use of double-laminated glass, wind noise and external noise are also hit. It feels like other noises squeezed into the place where the engine noise disappeared.
The test drive is Model Y Performance. I opened the vehicle settings window, selected the sport mode, and released the reins. Even if I touch the accelerator pedal a little, the car flutters. I can feel the tremendous power to put a 2 ton of weight from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.
The steering wheel is less than two turns from end to end. It’s like a sports car. Even after entering the winding near the house and encountering a sharp corner, there was no need to bend more than 90 degrees. The hard lower body and the battery on the floor were not allowed to roll.
Even if you forcefully enter the corner to test your limits, the tires do not scream once and are casual. Even if you turn a corner quite quickly, you never miss the road. Not long ago, I had the same experience at Arteon wearing the same tire (Pirelli Pjero). Sizes are 255/35 R21 in front and 275/35 R21 in rear.
On the way home, I turned on the music and turned on the autopilot. Model Y was not released in Korea, so FSD (Full Self Driving) was omitted, but it maintained a good distance between the vehicle in front and the center of the lane. The speakers placed wide in the front have good resolution to discuss the sense of space. It looks like you’re in a small but nice jazz bar.
After the test drive, there is room for the remaining mileage. The maximum mileage for a single charge of the Model Y Performance is 480km. Unlike the Model 3, the inability to turn off regenerative braking seems to have contributed to the increased mileage.
Tesla Model Y is about to be released in Korea in the first half of this year. It’s a car that sells well unless there’s anything special The key is the newly announced EV subsidy policy. For electric vehicles between 6,000 and 90 million won, only 50% of the state subsidy is provided.
Model Y Long Range AWD and Performance Trim to be imported in Korea are expected to be sold at a higher price than Model 3 Long Range (6,479 million won) and Performance (74.79 million won). The reason for Tesla’s rapid growth in Korea is that it received full subsidies for electric vehicles. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the actual sales volume.
