[데일리카 임상현 기자] Ford and Lincoln’s full-size SUVs, the Navigator and Expedition, which will take on the domestic stage this year, are preparing a partial change model. Ford and Lincoln, which are improving their marketability against competing models such as Cadillac, Jeep, and Chevrolet, plan to unveil two new full-size SUVs as early as the second half of the year.
The Navigator and Expedition, which have been on sale to the present after their first debut in the same year in 2017, will face the first change in four years of launch. Ford and Lincoln, which are developing two models designed on the same platform at the same time, will respond to competing models with new exterior and interior design and electrified powertrain.
In particular, the interior, which is predicted to be close to the full model change, centering on the large-screen display, is the biggest change in the new navigator and expedition.
The Navigator, which significantly increases the existing 10-inch display size, emphasizes the horizontal design, centering on the horizontal display. Competitive model Cadillac Escalade is leading the market with a 38-inch OLED display, so it is a quick response.
On the other hand, Expedition emphasizes the cutting-edge image through the vertical display applied to Ford’s electric car Mach-E. Pod, which is expanding its vertical display through Explorer other than Mach-E, chooses a method that minimizes the physical buttons.
The powertrain shares the latest specifications used in the F-150 pickup truck with a frame-type platform. Existing navigators and expeditions have a 3.5-liter V6 displacement, and show 375-450 horsepower depending on the model. However, in the partially modified model, an electrified powertrain equipped with an electric motor will appear on the front instead of a gasoline engine.
The electrified powertrain introduced through the Ford F-150 maintains the existing V6 3.5 liter twin turbo engine, but with an additional electric motor, it exhibits a maximum output of 430 hp and a maximum torque of 78.8 kgf·m. The transmission is a 10-speed automatic, with improved power, fuel efficiency, and traction compared to the existing gasoline engine.
However, the V8 engine traditionally installed in full-size SUVs is expected to disappear from the partially modified model. Emissions regulations, low fuel economy, and high prices are pushing consumers away from choices, which are driving the exit of the V8 gasoline engine.
The Navigator and Expedition, which are scheduled to be released in the second half of the year, will compete with the Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Grand Wagonier and Chevrolet Tahoe respectively.
